Hollywood loves to take hits from the past and reboot. A lot of people are against it, but I think it’s a good way to make different stories reach new generations. Because, after all, the films of the 80s, 90s, do not appeal to the younger audience. And that’s why, just today, two news about new Hollywood reboots arrived, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Selena Gomez.
Jake Gyllenhaal – Killer for Hire
In 1989, two years after the success of Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze starred in Killer for Hire. The film was not a huge success in cinema, but it ended up working on home video. The movie is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
It tells the story of James Dalton (Patrick Swayze). With a degree in philosophy, James chose to become the best bouncer. He has the mark of ending fights without killing, or even seriously hurting someone. That’s when he is hired by Frank Tilghman (Kevin Tighe), the owner of a nightclub. Tilghman wants the place to become a pleasant place and not the scene of constant bickering. So much so that James is soon injured and treated by Elizabeth Clay (Kelly Lynch), a beautiful doctor. But Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the “owner” of the city, is interested in her. Wesley is used to doing anything to achieve his goals. For this, he has henchmen who help him extort the population. That’s when the town becomes too small for Dalton and Brad.
For now, Jake Gyllenhaal is going to turn into this Killer for Hire in a movie for Amazon. Directed by Doug Liman (world in chaos). James will now be a former UFC fighter, who will become a security guard in the Florida Keys. “but you will soon discover that not all is as it seems in this tropical paradise”. In the cast are Billy Magnussen, Daniela Melchior, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Lukas Gage, among others. Filming begins in the Dominican Republic this month.
Selena Gomez – A Secretary of the Future
Em 1988, A Secretary of the Future was directed by Mike Nichols, and was nominated for several Oscars. Including film, director, actress (Melanie Griffith) and supporting actors (Sigourney Weaver and Joan Cusack). Won in the Song Category: Let the River Run, by Carly Simon. In New York, Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) is a secretary in an office that deals with the stock market. Fired, she gets a new job with Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver). She soon exposes her bold ideas to her boss, aiming to grow in her career. When Katharine has an accident and leaves the office, Tess takes her place and starts a business partnership with Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford). And soon the two end up romantically involved. I love the movie, which unfortunately is not currently available on streaming.
According to Deadline, 20th Century Studios is developing the reboot together with Selena Gomez (currently in great Only Murders in the Building). In theory, the film should premiere on Hulu in the US and here on Star Plus. But that should take a while because they are still developing the script, which was in charge of Ilana Pena (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend).
