We’ve seen a lot of movies about people being chased by beasts in a hostile environment. the great Predator: The Hunt is one of them (okay, it’s an extraterrestrial, but the principle is the same). In the case of The Beast, which opens in theaters this Thursday, the hunter is a lion. It has all the face of a B movie, which ends up being elevated to another category by the presence of Idris Elba in the main role.
Let’s get to the story! The Doctor. Nate Daniels (Idris Elba) is a man who recently lost his wife. To grieve, he decides to return to South Africa, where he met her, to spend a vacation with his two daughters (Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries). They will stay at a nature reserve run by old family friend Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley). But that rest will soon turn into a test of survival. That’s because a vengeful lion, the only survivor of hunters, who killed his entire pack, begins to devour any human in his path. With that, he chases the doctor and his family across the savannah. Now, the only way to escape the beast’s clutches is to fight and survive. Or kill the lion once and for all.
What did I think of the movie?
The cinema has already given us an excellent film about the man against a lion in The shadow and the darkness, with Michael Douglas (available on Globoplay). This one To Fera does not claim to be at the same level of excellence. It’s a thriller, with two or three suspenseful scenes that scare and work. The story is extremely predictable. And Idris’ final fight with the lion is a bit ridiculous. However, the film has its strengths. The photography is gorgeous, and the CGI lions are especially efficient. And of course, there’s Idris Elba, always an out of the box actor, with a very strong magnetism and presence.
But it is also necessary to highlight the two girls, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries (who will be in the new Percy Jackson series). They’re just an excellent counterpoint to Idris, and they function as a troubled family that is grieving.
