In July of this year, the Duolingo announced its partnership with HBO Max for the launch of House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones spin-off series) and the course update High Valirian, one of the ancient languages of the GOT universe spoken by the Targaryens, the main characters of the new plot. We have some pretty cool information about the impact of the course on the platform:
Fans are really looking forward and excited for the series debut, and High Valyrian is now Duolingo’s most popular conlang (or constructed language) with 524 thousand users. It means a 155% increase in course students since its update and the announcement of the partnership with HBO Max, in addition to being the second fastest growing language in Brazil on the platform compared to the previous 3 weeks.
Students studying High Valyrian take an average of two lessons a day and since July 19th, they have collectively studied the equivalent of 239 days or nearly 8 months! It is also worth noting that 43% of app users who start studying a conlang go on to learn another language on Duolingo. The excitement to discover a new language is an incentive to start a new course.
Working with linguist David Peterson, the creator of the language behind High Valyrian, Duolingo’s expanded course features over 150 new words and 700+ phrases to practice the language in the app. With five new units in the course that cover conversational phrases like talking about cooking, making excuses and – most exciting for the new series – commanding dragons!
And to celebrate the extension of the course and the launch of the new series next Sunday, 08/21, the Duolingo will give away on its social networks in Brazil and in other countries some copies of “Wing of the King”a commemorative pin created especially for GOT fans.
