Pinterest is committed to doing its part to drive sustainable results across its platform, operations and communities to help create a greener world. Today, Pinterest extends these efforts by committing to buy 100% renewable energy for offices worldwide by 2023. This commitment expands on its existing efforts to save energy in offices and reduce the company’s global greenhouse gas emissions.
Mia Ketterling, Global Sustainability Leader at Pinterest, said:
“We strive to create workspaces that encourage employees and are designed and operated responsibly. Providing 100% renewable energy to our offices by 2023 is another step on the journey to building a better, more sustainable future for employees and the global community.”
Starting with the San Francisco headquarters, Pinterest will now receive 100% renewable energy through CleanPowerSF’s SuperGreen program. Across its entire global real estate portfolio — from Chicago to Tokyo and São Paulo — it will acquire energy attribute certificates according to a set of guiding principles, such as prioritizing projects carried out in the country in the same year the electricity was consumed, using energy from projects that maximize impact on the system and support local communities.
The 2022 Pinterest Predicts report highlights the theme of Nature at home — incorporating nature into the company’s physical locations — as a growing trend this year. This design concept played an important role in the design of the newly opened office in Toronto and the soon to be opened office in Mexico City, highlighting the interplay between sustainability, well-being and design.
Clean energy also remains a key priority for Pinterest as it continues to grow. At all new locations, the platform will strive to source renewable energy locally whenever possible and will prioritize office spaces that are highly rated and certified such as LEED, BREEAM and Energy Star.
Pinterest’s commitment to renewable energy builds on existing efforts to create a green, holistic workplace. Some of the efforts are:
- Waste reduction in offices. Pinterest partners with local organizations to recycle surplus office furniture and equipment. For example, Pinterest has been working with Revivin — a hardware lifecycle management platform — since 2017 to donate used laptops to communities in need. As the platform overhauls workspaces with PinFlex, the new employee work policy, it donates used and surplus office furniture to San Francisco schools that are part of the Unified School District.
- Reduction of food waste. The platform is testing the use of AI in the San Francisco office to help monitor, design and reduce kitchen waste. It also works with Copia to donate any surplus meals to the local community.
- Employee engagement. Employees can take advantage of a number of green benefits available. Pinterest has partnered with EnergySage — a service comparison site — to offer all US employees incentives to install solar energy in their homes or subscribe to local community solar farms. As an incentive to use public transportation to get to the office, Pinterest offers all employees a monthly commute allowance. In addition, to support the new working model, it is purchasing renewable energy credits to reimburse global employees for home energy costs.
- Resources for employees. Pinterest provides information for employees on how to live and work more sustainably, such as a guide to sustainable business travel and tips on saving energy at home.
Pinterest is committed to doing its part to drive sustainable results on our platform, in its operations and in communities. Committing to renewable energy is just one of the first steps on the journey to inspire a better future and create a greener world.
