It’s been a while since Hollywood has revisited its own history in movies and miniseries. It tries to present an alternative version, even more romantic and with a happier ending. This was the case of the excellent, but little recognized, Hollywood, by Ryan Murphy. Available on Netflix, it mixes real characters with fictional ones. It’s wonderful! Quentin Tarantino followed the same principle in Once upon a time in Hollywood, that gave an Oscar to Brad Pitt. It is also available on Netflix. And the same Brad is the star of yet another old Hollywood story, Babylon. The first trailer is here:
The film is scheduled to open in theaters here in 2023. But it will open at the end of the year in the United States (Christmas Day) just in time to be eligible for an Oscar. Looks like an Oscar, lol. First, because it is directed by Damian Chazelle, the same as La La Land. And it has an absurd cast. Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Olivia Wilde, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire, among others.
What it is?
Babylon takes place during a difficult time in Hollywood. It’s the transition from the silent to talkies era in the late 1920s. Brad’s Jack Conrad and Margot’s Nellie LaRoy characters are at very different stages in their careers. Nellie is an aspiring star who has a lot of dreams. And she lets herself be carried away into a world of chaos. Jack, on the other hand, is a swashbuckling movie star, who enjoys life as if it were an eternal party. And it’s at one of those parties that things get completely out of hand.
Brad’s character is clearly inspired by great silent movie stars like Douglas Fairbanks and John Gilbert. Margot’s, who replaced Emma Stone, seems to have a lot of Clara Bow and Jeaane Eagels. Diego Calva from Narcos: Mexico plays Manny Torres, a Mexican immigrant. It represents a look from outsiders – and also from the audience.
I don’t know about you, but I was crazy to see this one Babylon!
