Okay, we’ve known for a long time that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the most expensive production ever made for streaming. And now that the first season is available in full on Prime Video, you can say we can see where all the money was spent. Just so you know, it was 1 billion dollars for two seasons. The production is sensational, with great care in the details, in addition to a little-seen grandeur. But… always the “but”, the series didn’t win me over.
Starting with the story. For those who are fans of the films of Lord of the Rings, I warn you that the plot takes place thousands of years before Frodo’s adventure. It focuses on a time in history when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose and also fell. All at the same time that heroes were tested and had their hope almost annihilated by the great villain of the Lord of the Rings universe. The series begins at a time of peace, when the cast of new and old characters must face a resurgence of evil. And he comes from the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains. Kingdoms and characters will carve legacies that will live on long after they are gone.
What did I find?
There are characters that were present in the movies. This is the case, for example, of Galadriel, the elf who was made by Cate Blanchett, and who here is personified by Morfydd Clark. And there are also others we’ve always heard of like Sauron or Isildur. In fact, a big intention of the series is for you to recognize locations, names, and, of course, rings. However, despite the fans’ will to love, and the fantastic production, the series has problems. And that, of course, starts with the story.
The Rings of Power lose when splitting. There are many characters that are presented at the same time – and that end up leaving you lost. Everything is superficial, disconnected. And of course, it reminds me of almost 10 hours of films directed by Peter Jackson with nostalgia. And this is even more evident when realizing that the main character, Galadriel, is so unbearable, even boring. When it’s impossible to like heroin, content has problems. The most interesting character turns out to be the hairy foot Nori, a clear ancestor of Frodo.
The season finale still saved the situation. It has interesting revelations, and an important moment involving the rings. But that’s not enough to become a fan. I confess it was hard to get past the first episode. The Rings of Power still had the problem of being released at the same time as another epic spinoff series, the dragon house (HBO Max). This one involves, shocks, and continues with praise to the original (in this case, Game of Thrones). Unfortunately, it stayed for the second season of The Rings of Power solve the problems of history.
