A unexpected death Chadwick Boseman has left Marvel with a big problem on its hands. What to do with the Black Panther franchise without its lead actor? And worse, that he left in a way that moved everyone. Director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler has said in interviews that he had to completely change what he envisioned for the film. And what he’s solved is hitting theaters this Thursday in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?? The film has some good moments, but overall, it’s a lot of fun.
The film begins with the death of T-Challa. And right from the start, I warn you that you’re going to cry. But after this prologue, this new Black Panther is already starting to show that he has problems. Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milages fight to protect the fragile nation from other countries after the death of their king. As the people of Wakanda struggle to keep moving forward in this new chapter, the late king’s family and friends must unite. All with the help of Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). In the midst of it all, Wakanda has yet to learn to live with the underwater nation Atlantis and its king Namor (Tenoch Huerta). And that’s where the biggest threat comes from.
What did I think of the movie?
the new movie of Black Panther has an excellent start, already showing T-Challa’s death from a mysterious illness. It’s impossible not to get emotional. Even that Marvel opening with the logo shows only scenes of it, as a great tribute. This is the prologue. From there, the film begins the story completely without base or head, which will put the kingdom of Wakanda in danger due to the threat of the underwater beings of Talokan. Those who follow the comics will notice the change. There Namor was the prince of Atlantis, but in the movie the kingdom changed completely. Not only to introduce a Latin theme, in fact Mayan, but also to differentiate Atlantis from Aquaman?? After all, it’s from the neighboring studio, lol.
It’s just all rolled up and slow. There’s a sequence where Shuri meets the kingdom, which looks like she’s taking a tour inside a Disney park attraction. And that is still very long. Furthermore, the bluish people of the place seem to be reused Avatar, LOL. But what really bothers about its 2h40 duration is an extremely repetitive story. The action sequences always seem to be the same (the final battle is surreal so unlikely). And Shuri happens to be the main character, and she has none of the empathy with the audience that she showed in the first movie.
The cast
There are also several characters that are totally expendable. This is the case of Martin Freeman (Everett Ross) and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Val). Wasted as luxury sidekicks. The film also features another well-known character from the comics, Riri Williams, or Ironheart?? This one will soon get its own series on Disney Plus. It’s ok, but nothing more. The same is true of Tenoch Huerta, the Namor. This villain lacks charisma! And that’s more of a problem for the film.
However, beyond the beginning, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever there are other positive things. The biggest one is Angela Bassett. I’m about to see someone who passes as much royalty and strength as the actress. Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o are also great, as always. In fact, the film shows women taking charge – and that’s always a positive thing, especially in this superhero universe.
And still…
And of course there’s also a very special cameo – #semspoiler. I’m sure a lot of people will embark on the story. Even more so because the movie ends on an emotional note, just as it started. And this continues into the mid-credits scene (there’s only one). With this, the audience ends up leaving with a positive feeling of the cinema. Even if it’s been rolled up for two hours. Oh, and here’s the warning, Black Panther will return…
