Another good Korean zombie movie, this time in theaters

I love Korean zombie movies and series. Haha! They are always jumpy, fast, and scariest. movies like zombie invasion and the series Kingdom (both available on Netflix) are among the best I’ve seen in the genre. But, I didn’t have the opportunity to watch the series The Cursed, which is also on Netflix. Anyway, I had no problem watching The Curse – Awakening of the Dead, which opens in theaters this Thursday. The film is a spinoff of the series. And it has good moments.

There are several references to things that I imagine happened on the show. But that doesn’t get in the way of understanding. The Curse – Awakening of the Dead shows a series of murders committed by the undead. In the first case, a suspect’s body is found next to the victim at the crime scene. Only the police discover that the corpse died three months ago. Meanwhile, journalist Lim Jin-hee receives a mysterious call from a man claiming to be responsible for the murder. He warns that three more murders are to come. And that these crimes will be carried out by reanimated corpses, the Jaechaui. On the day of the first announced murder, the police are poised to catch the killer. Only she is surprised by an attack by a Jaechaui army. Who is behind all this and why?

What did I think?

The argument may seem cliché – once again, the pharmaceutical industry is to blame. But the way the story is told is quite different and interesting. Screenwriter Yeon Sang-ho also penned the great zombie invasion(2016) and the bad Zombie Invasion 2: Peninsula (2020). Here he is somewhere in the middle. The attack of the zombies together is frightening. The chase scene, especially in the tunnel, is very well done. It’s one of those movies that you won’t even remember in a while. But for sure, you’ll leave the theater thinking it was a fun experience. After all, it has suspense, action, witchcraft. Makes me want to watch the Netflix series. These people from Korea really know how to make zombie content!
