Pinterest, aiming to increase the debate about the representation of black people and understand the importance of developing improvements that constantly strengthen the pillar of diversity, created a series called “Stories that move us”, in the month of black culture. The initiative is original content that strengthens the presence and identity of the black community within the main categories of content on the inspiration platform.
With the increase in conversations surrounding the movie adaptation of The Little Mermaid and the positive impact that black representation has had on the internet, Pinterest noted that over the past 7 months, searches by black anime characters, black characters, black princesses e black heroess increased on the platform.
“We are very proud of the creators selected for the new content series “Stories that move us”, in which the goal is for black people in Brazil and around the world to feel represented and see the possibility of creating or get inspiration from Pinterest.” says Fernanda Cerávolo, director of content and creators at Pinterest for Latin America.
Pinterest is a positive and inspiring place for the Afro-Brazilian community to be and create, so the campaign kicked off by asking 8 creators from the Afro-Brazilian community (@cozinhaeginga, @rolmagalhaes, @steyonce_n, @bellacomdoisls, @luanaliima_ , @soutipo4, @tchelogomez, @carvalhoaniely) to reinterpret a fictional character who challenged them at some point in their lives. Pinterest shared a board with references and a series of questions:
- What would Rapunzel’s hairstyle look like if she were an afro?
- What would have been Anton Ego’s favorite dish in Ratatouille?
- What would Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace dance like in Pulp Fiction?
- What would William Wallace’s makeup look like in Braveheart?
The idea was for content creators to develop an Idea Pin that reflects the process of creating their reinterpretation along with the result, and a folder that brings together everything they used as inspiration to create. Check out some of the inspiring ideas below, such as the recreation of Daenerys Targaryen’s look by Aniely, Emília’s characterization by Carolina Magalhåes, Princess Cinderella’s hairstyle idea if she were a Black Princess by Steyce Norrande, the okra soup recipe by kitchenaeginga.
