To celebrate Black Consciousness Day, which this year shares the date with the opening of the biggest sporting event on the planet, YouTube Shorts rescues the story of Arthur Friedenreich, the Tigre, a great Brazilian footballer who, in 1921, could not participate in the Brazilian team simply because he was black?? In addition to creating a special commemorative shirt to highlight Tigre’s importance to the world of football, YouTube Shorts also promotes a series of contents to tell the story of the idol and a manifesto which highlights the influence of this athlete’s trajectory in the construction of the fight against racism in Brazil.
In 1921, on the eve of the dispute of the South American tournament that was held in Argentina, the president of Brazil at the time, Epitácio Pessoa, determined that only white athletes would be summoned to the Brazilian team, in order to “preserve the country’s reputation in the world”. outside”. Due to this determination, Arthur Friedenreich, the greatest Brazilian player in the period, was prevented from composing the team to represent Brazil, which lost the competition that year. Altogether, Tigre scored 595 goals in 650 games in his career, reaching a higher goal average than Pelé himself.
Rapper Djonga, an important voice in the anti-racist fight, is responsible for telling the story of Tigre in the manifesto video that was produced by YouTube Shorts.
Samanta Yokota, Marketing Manager at YouTube Brazil, says:
“The purpose of the material is, in addition to shedding light on the history of this great sports idol, to highlight the importance of Black Awareness Day, so that the date is not overshadowed by the start of the biggest event of the year.”
In addition to the singer, important names like Iza, Mc Soffia, Fioti, Tasha and Tracie, Luane Dias, Léo Bronks and Jean Paulo, among others, also wear Tigre’s shirt to spread the message.
To end the tribute in style, YouTube Shorts will put on an exhibition celebrating Arthur Friedenreich starting on 11/25, at the Football Museum, in São Paulo. In addition to panels exposing his life story, shirts used by the star player and an interactive space where it will be possible to watch the manifest video, the exhibition will feature a customized replica by the artist Massai of the Copa América cup in which Tigre was prevented from participating. YouTube Shorts will also guarantee ten buses to take around 400 children from non-profit institutions to visit the Tigre exhibition and the Museum. Samantha also says:
“Arthur Friedenreich was one of the greatest players in Brazilian football and his story has enormous significance, as he marked the fight against racism and the country’s sporting legacy. With this campaign, we emphasize the need to carry out this type of historical portrayal, highlighting The Tigre as a symbol of all people who still fight against social injustices. YouTube allows people to tell their stories and show them around the world. What we are doing with this project is to take advantage of the power of the platform to remember the story of this player who was placed on the sidelines of the spotlight and bring it to the forefront of the discussion on racial justice.”
