Favelão, as the Favelas National Cup is better known, held its football championship finals today, Saturday, the 19th, at Arena Barueri/SP. The games between the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (women’s) and São Paulo and Goiás (men’s) teams had free admission and were broadcast live on TV Globo. The event was held after a large congregation among favelas across Brazil, in the state of São Paulo, during the month of November.
The games that decided the champions of the first national edition of the tournament were organized by Central Única das Favelas (CUFA) and produced by InFavela, a company of the Favela Holding Group.
In the women’s category, the Rio de Janeiro team, with a goal by Tuane in the 18th minute of the second half, was the great champion and lifted the Marina Soares Athayde Trophy, of the national edition of the biggest football championship between favelas in the world. In the male, the São Paulo team became the big winner, on penalties, taking the Jair da Matta Trophy.
The names of the trophies symbolically honored people who had an important trajectory since the beginning of CUFA – Jair da Matta, in life, and Marina Soares Athayde in memoriam. The financial reward was the same for both champions. Honoring the event was the former striker of the Brazilian women’s soccer team, Roseli de Belo.
Celso Athayde, creator of the championship, says:
