Last Sunday, January 2nd, Steam reached one of its greatest moments. The network managed to have approximately 28 million players online on Valve’s online store at the same time. The number is a record for the network, which had never reached such proportions before.
The information came from the website Kotaku, which shows that the highlight was not only on the second day of the year, but since the previous Sundays. The number of users logged in simultaneously had been growing week after week. Due to the growing numbers, the expectation is that the Steam record will be broken again soon.
According to statistics, it is expected that around seven to eight million users were actually playing something while online. The rest, around 20 million users, were just looking for and researching the games that are available on the online store.
Taking a closer look at which games were successful during Steam’s broken record, we can see some famous games. Among them are Counter Strike, which concentrated most of the players online in the day. In addition to the famous shooting game, others could also be observed such as DOTA 2 and GTA V.
It is worth noting that the main games played are not releases. Grand Thieft Auto V, the GTA, was released in 2013, nearly 10 years ago. None of the top games among those played on Sunday have been released in the past two years.
