It has been widely talked about that the Qatar 2022 Cup, which is taking place right now, is one of the most technological in recent times. However, many football lovers believe that new technologies are taking away the magic of football, that the referee’s uncertainty in calling a foul or a penalty is part of this sport, which especially in Brazil is a national passion. But is technology really getting in the way of sport?
At first, let’s talk about the technology that has been the biggest target of citrus, the VAR, “video assistant referee” (video assistant referee). It is worth remembering that this is not the first time that this technology is being used, we had the debut at the World Cup in 2018, in Russia, where it was heavily criticized for taking a long time to display the results.
But what is VAR anyway? As the name says, this is a “video assistant referee”, we have a monitoring room in the stadium where some video referees are located to help analyze the bids, in addition we have a booth on the field where the referee can consult the video of the bid if deemed necessary, in addition to electronic communication with the team in the VAR room. The system also has 12 tracking cameras that can analyze the ball, which has a sensor installed in its center, which will send data 500 times per second to the video room and up to 29 points on the body of each player on the field, including limbs. and extremities of players. This year the system has an update called the Semiautomatic Impediment System, and having this data makes all the difference to help with these analyses.
It is worth remembering that VAR cannot act in all bids, it can only be used in the following situations:
- Goal: Check if the goal had no irregularity, if the player is offside, for example how
- occurred with the player Vini Jr in the match between Brazil and Switzerland;
- Penalty: If it really was a penalty or a simulation of the player;
- Direct red card: Any foul or anti-game that the field referee may not have seen;
- Player Identification: Correcting the referee in case of a punishment for the wrong player;
Even in these situations the final decision rests with the on-field judge, even if video referees are 100% sure of a shot, it is the on-field judge who has the final word.
Now that you know about VAR, why is a system that helps reduce possible refereeing errors causing so much controversy?
For football fanatics, it is precisely the unpredictability of the referee that makes football what it is today, this passion. Who doesn’t remember the famous “God’s hand” of Maradona in the 1986 World Cup in a game against England, in the quarterfinals that qualified Argentina for the next phase, this is part of football sports folklore.
Another argument is American football itself, which for a long time now uses technologies for marking and video conference of plays, but for many people this makes the game very slow for all these conferences, leaving it little dynamic and very technical, and therefore not makes the success that our football “Soccer” root does.
I believe that the biggest fear of the fans, in general, is that we reach the point of using artificial intelligence refereeing the games, where we won’t have room for errors, making it a cold sport, because the controversies of the fans discussing whether or not it was a penalty are part of football. that the team was robbed by the referee. At the end of the day, football is an entertainment that many people don’t want to be something mechanical and plastered, following the rules exactly, football has always been known for its trickery, the charisma of the players and especially the passion of the fans.
But regardless of what happens, VAR is here to stay, FIFA and the confederations have invested a lot in new technologies, so that we have an increasingly fair game for both teams.
From what I’ve seen so far in games, VAR has created very interesting situations, such as the tension of confirming a goal, the whole stadium stopped looking at the screens waiting for the referee’s decision, it became one more emotion in the game, I believe that it’s not about the technology itself. As it is a sport that stirs passion, we will always have complaints when it is against our team and we will praise when it is in favor, but one thing is certain, with or without VAR Brazil will go humo to Hexa!!!
