The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk is signaling several changes in the way the social network works during the last few days. On Thursday, Dec. 8, the billionaire stated that he plans to introduce an option to let users determine whether the company has limited how many other users can view their posts. In doing so, Musk is effectively tapping into an issue that has been a rallying cry among some conservatives who claim the social network has suppressed or “shadow banned” its content.
“Twitter is working on a software update that will show your account’s real status, so you’ll clearly know if you’ve been banned, why, and how to appeal.,” tweeted Musk. He did not provide additional details or a timeline.
His announcement came amid a re-release of internal Twitter documents on Thursday, sanctioned and applauded by Musk, which once again highlighted the practice of limiting the reach of certain potentially harmful content – a common practice in the industry that Musk himself Musk has seemingly endorsed and criticized it.
Last month, Musk said Twitter’s “new” policy is “free speech, not freedom of reach,” echoing an approach that is something of an industry standard. ??Negative/hateful tweets will be maximized and demonetized, so no ads or other revenue for Twitter.”
In addition to the recent update on issues of visibility of publications on Twitter, Musk will still make a more sudden change in the way the site works: now the posts can have up to 4,000 characters. The current character limit is 280, focusing the social network on the concentration of small texts.
