Microsoft reportedly offered Sony the option to put Call of Duty on PlayStation Plus. This would be one of the latest concessions from the Xbox makers regarding the popular FPS franchise as part of the deal to acquire Activision Blizzard.
The international website Bloomberg claims that Sony did not accept the offer. The company behind the PS4 and PS5 is still arguing against the acquisition, arguing that Microsoft could make Call of Duty exclusive to the Xbox.
It’s worth noting that the Federal Trade Commission is suing Microsoft over its attempted merger with Activision Blizzard. The lawsuit, filed Dec. 8, claims the deal would suppress competition in the video game industry.
Microsoft tried to combat the anti-competitive accusations by providing several settlements with Call of Duty in particular. For example, the manufacturer of the Xbox would have offered a 10-year contract to Sony, which maintains the FPS franchise on the PlayStation. This was followed up by Xbox boss Phil Spencer stating on Twitter that his company “made a 10-year commitment to bring Call of Duty to life. [Nintendo] following the merger of Microsoft and Activision Blizzard King”.
The whole saga began in January, when Microsoft officially announced the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion. This is not only the biggest merger in the history of Microsoft, but also of the video game industry as a whole. That is, if the merger goes through.
