While sequels to the Avatar franchise haven’t been officially confirmed, the planned films will definitely move forward. The future seems so well under way that writer-director James Cameron was thinking about it as early as the making of Avatar: The Way to Water.
Speaking with international magazine Entertainment Weekly, Cameron explained that to help younger actors he filmed scenes from Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 simultaneously with the recently released sequel. This prevents the aging of the actors from being noticeable to audiences during the follow-up to the franchise.
The Way of Water features several young characters, including Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who was 7 when he was cast and is now 13) and Spider (Jack Champion, who was 12 when he was cast but is now 18). how champion was “growing like a weeda”, the second, third and first act of the fourth film had to be done in one production. In Cameron’s words:
“Otherwise you get – and I love Stranger Things – but you get the Stranger Things effect, where they should still be in high school. [mas] look like 27 years old. You know, I love the show. Alright, let’s suspend disbelief. We like the characters, but, you know how it is.”
Avatar 2 continues to perform well at the box office, reaching $500 million worldwide, while Disney films surpass $4 billion at the box office combined in 2022.
