You know that moment when you have all those hundreds of tabs open in your browser, with all that incredible knowledge available, everything selected by you, high courses and lectures, powerful insights, but suddenly the end of the day comes and you have the feeling that Didn’t even handle a third? You are certainly not alone. I believe we all know that feeling of being overwhelmed and the struggle to keep up with the seemingly endless flow of information. But how to ensure that this knowledge is put into practice?
Tab 0 – Needs
Here I should start bringing a tab with some extremely important and relevant content, perhaps referencing some renowned thinker to generate that great impact, but in fact my first tab has content that is very banal, useless and disposable like almost 99% of all the others that are open. We have several reasons for having so many open doors: curiosity, procrastination, research, habit, etc. The truth is that there will always be a plausible justification for having that pile of accumulated tabs that we will never read or delve into. And so, even when we are stuck, we keep going, filling our backpack with an endless collection of unnecessary things, until the time that crash occurs and we need to press the reset.
Aba 1 – Reset kit
To reset your brain, you can take a break, disconnect from electronic devices, spend time in nature, exercise, practice relaxation techniques, and seek support from friends or mental health professionals. It’s really worth it all in practice, but something special caught my attention.
Tab 2 – Conscious self-isolation
In many cultures and traditions, long periods of seclusion and isolation are seen as a way to gain clarity and wisdom.
Mythology
In India, Shiva spent a thousand years in a cave. Amaterasu in Japan also had its cave moment. In China, Laozi also spent many years isolated in the mountains.
Religion
In Christianity, Jesus spent forty days in the desert. Even today, in Buddhism, meditation retreats are used as a path to enlightenment. Whether it’s a solitary retreat in the mountains or a silent meditation practice, they all have a common goal: to gain clarity of mind and heart, to better understand yourself and the universe. By moving away from distractions, they believe that the person is able to gain a new perspective on life and reconsider their challenges, goals and purpose in life.
Science
Several scientific and artistic geniuses also isolated themselves in some way before making important discoveries and creations. Isaac Newton isolated himself for two years because of the great plague, and it was during this time that he discovered the law of gravity. Albert Einstein spent long periods of time alone.
Art, Music and Literature
Throughout history artists, musicians and writers have found inspiration in moments of seclusion. Michelangelo was known to have isolated himself. He would often spend up to 16 hours a day alone while painting and sculpting, being completely isolated from the outside world.
In music, after being banned from a jam session, Charlie Parker disappeared for five years. When he returned to the jazz scene, he had transformed. His time in self-isolation allowed him to focus on his music and develop his skills to a level that would make him one of the most influential musicians in jazz history.
Of course, everyone’s experience with isolation is different. And it doesn’t always happen on its own accord. Sometimes they are completely adverse situations that can be very difficult.
Despite the great success, JK Rowling reported many challenges in writing the first Harry Potter book. Those who write know that isolation is part of an essential routine. She, who was a single mother at the time, reported that she was very poor and had to write in cafes because she didn’t have the money to pay for heating at home. She also reported that she “would write at night, after the kids were in bed” and that she “would actually write in bed because it was the only warm place”. Despite all this, she managed to complete her book, while also dealing with the difficulty of finding time and motivation. The results come through a combination of factors such as investment in your essence and innate talents, persistence, focus, concentration, discipline, dedication, obstinacy, passion and abdication, among many others.
A path to your essence
The great minds of history show us that solitude can be beneficial in many ways. While it’s important to maintain social connections and take care of your mental health, it’s also important to take time out for yourself. This is where we focus more on our ideas and ambitions, without the usual distractions, we can explore our creativity and progress on projects that we might never have had the opportunity to do otherwise. We can also learn to be comfortable with ourselves, distancing ourselves from our identity and appreciating our essence.
While the idea of self-isolation can seem daunting, there are many ways to make the most of this opportunity. In this context, real-time and immersive technologies can be invaluable tools, as being in a generative immersive alternate reality can make perfect sense for self-isolation.
On the hardware side, XR (Extended Reality) devices together with haptic suits can take self-isolation to another level. With XR headsets, for example, you can explore new worlds and remain fully immersed in your own experiences without leaving your home. Some models allow you to enhance your reality by overlaying virtual objects and graphics on real-world environments, and haptic suits provide a haptic experience, allowing users to feel the physical sensation of interacting with objects in a simulated environment.
With advances in Real-Time Rendering Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, we are able to create generative worlds that allow a level of content customization never seen before. Now we can render huge amounts of data in real time. Therefore, we are now moving from the moment where we only consume canned content or experience, to the moment where we can experience our own versions, because they can be customized to meet the needs and desires of each individual.
We will have no less of that in the next chapters of evolution. Since today, you don’t necessarily need to disappear into a real cave, because it is already, somehow, very close, within reach of an immersive device. And it doesn’t have to be just any cave, it can be a customized cave for you or for you. Your space in your time, in your world, and you are the one who decides what happens there.
Finally, a good reason to isolate oneself in some kind of virtual world, now perhaps that metaverse is starting to make some sense, like any place where we find a reason, a small excuse, for a meeting alone with ourselves.
I’m going to take advantage of this right now and isolate myself in my cave. Who knows, maybe you’ll find yours too, be it a real, virtual or mental space, or any other metaverse around the next corner, where you can enjoy your greatest wealth: time. And in finding the time, self-isolation can be a great ally. I hope it was worth the time you spent on this tab. And now, I’m curious to know which ones are you going to keep open, and which ones are you going to close? I look forward to seeing you back next year, sharing with me some tab that is worth investing in isolation.
