The year 2022 certainly wasn’t bad for those who like to follow series. With full steam streaming and several high-budget productions, something that until a few years ago was rare for the format, a lot of new things were released, in addition to already established programs that achieved continuations with the highest quality standard as before.
Even so, after watching so many programs it’s hard not to choose some that have been the specials that marked the year and, certainly, Ruptura is one of those specials that stay in your head even after a long time after watching it.
The series is a production directed, written and produced by a name known to the general public: Ben Stiller. The Night at the Museum and Zoolander star is usually in front of the camera, but that’s not the case here. Still, it cannot be said that he is a rookie, since he has previous projects, such as Tropic Thunder, which even earned an Oscar nomination for Robert Downey Jr.
This time, Stiller delivers something very different than usual in Breakthrough. Although it has its funny moments, the focus of the series is not comedy, but science fiction and mystery, in addition to a great criticism of the work environment and the entire structure of modern society in relation to this environment so present in our lives. .
But after all, what is Rupture about?
The series takes place in a universe almost like ours. Almost. In the set world, some details are a little different, but the big highlight is a surgical process called rupture. Individuals who undergo this surgery have two separate areas of the brain and, after it, have their personal life and work life completely disconnected from each other.
Although the procedure seems like a dream for many people, nothing is that simple. From this, two different subjects are created. One of them is the external call, the person who lives his ordinary life, outside the company. The second is called internal, which remembers and lives within the work environment. The problems start when the interns start to be curious to know what their lives are like outside that company.
The series begins from the point of view of “Helly R”, an employee who participated in the procedure to work at Lumon in an intern position. Through Helly’s vision, we gradually discover the environment, after all, she has just undergone surgery and also has no idea where she is and, above all, who she is.
Still, the protagonist is Mark S., or, Mark Scout, as his external is actually called. Played by Adam Scott, he has just become manager of the department he works for at Lumon and is primarily responsible for setting Helly up in her new world. In addition to these two, we also follow two other employees more closely: Erving and Dylan.
The plot of the series develops through the mystery. While we know more about Mark’s outer life, we know next to nothing about the other three. More than that: Rupture explains practically nothing of what the characters’ jobs are about, since not even they themselves know. The whole story involves finding out what it’s all about and whether Mark and his collaborators at the company are doing the right thing by following Lumon’s orders.
But after all, why is the series so good?
The main breaking point is through the themes addressed in the series. With science fiction connecting us to history and mystery (and charisma, of course) behind each character, the plot addresses topics that are relevant to everyone, with emphasis on professional life and the way we deal with work.
One of the biggest highlights and main factors to tell the story and convey the subtext of the production is the photography, made by Jessica Lee Gagné. Taking into account that the interns are almost slaves, never leaving work, the director of photography’s challenge is to create, from common office elements, a scenario that seems both organized and completely uncomfortable for the public.
From there, the series uses and abuses perfect angles, linear and symmetrical, but at the same time strange. Lumon’s corridors are always too long, and the camera spares no time to show us the characters walking down them endlessly. Although everything looks very clean, it’s always too big, too lonely. In addition to the creative positioning of each character on the scene, to make them look like an object within the work environment itself.
This entire structure is made to address the reality of the characters, especially the inmates, who have nothing in life other than their own jobs. The main point is the reflection on the balance between professional and personal life, and how comfortable and satisfied your job makes you, but this is not the only approach of the series.
The boss of Mark and the other inmates, Miss Cobel, contrary to what the staff think, did not go through the Disruption process. However, her life is totally dedicated to Lumon in a way that is more than professional, but also religious, making room for discussions that go even further than work balance, but the very meaning of it for some people.
And above all, the aforementioned mystery is an element that always helps to hook most viewers, Lost is the greatest example of this. The fact that only a few hints and clues are presented throughout the season makes fans create theories, and nothing better than waiting for a mystery and trying to figure everything out with friends before the big reveal!
Where to watch?
Breakthrough is currently available on Apple TV+, Apple’s streaming service. With 9 episodes, the first season has already ended, to the sadness of those anxious that they will have to wait a while for the next season, which has already been confirmed and even started the filming processes.
