The update was made with the aim of making the social network a safe and welcoming platform.
Instagram has expanded the option to include pronouns in the profile bio and, starting this year, users will be able to indicate in their profiles which pronouns identify themselves, including the neutral one.
In 2022, the social network had already included more languages, such as Portuguese and Spanish. The new update aims to make Instagram a safe and welcoming platform.
According to Instagram’s press office, it had already been observed that users include their pronouns in different ways, such as in the username or in the bio description itself.
The update was done in partnership with experts and external NGOs such as GLAAS, The Trevor Project and PFLAG in the US. In addition, the social network also consulted internal volumes such as Pride and the company’s Inclusive Product Council.
To include the pronoun in the bio, the user just needs to enter their own profile, access the “Edit profile” option and include the pronouns in the “Pronouns” field. In Portuguese, users can choose ela/dela, ele/dele and elu/delu.
