2023 arrived with everything and the first month of the year can remember a very important and increasingly remembered discussion: the importance of mental health. Created in 2014, the white January campaign addresses several related topics, and Adnews could not be left out, remembering how important this approach is in the work environment.
Often, collaborators and employees are introduced to environments that are not always favorable to their mental health. With many deadlines, fear of failure, interpersonal relationships and much more, work can end up being a conducive space for the development of anxiety, depression, among other disorders.
It is worth mentioning that this is not a topic related only to the individual criteria of each employee of a company or agency. The quality of the environment and collaboration with mental health is a subject that affects everyone equally, creating an increasingly better and more pleasant climate for those who are present.
Thinking about the importance of these initiatives, Daniel Portuga created his own project that ended up becoming something far beyond what he had initially imagined: Post em Branco. If you’ve been following the site for a while, you might remember this initiative, which even won awards.
The pandemic period undoubtedly exacerbated several existing problems related to mental health, inside and outside the work environment. Thinking about her current situation, Portuga created the initiative on Instagram that ended up helping several other people.
To better understand this topic and how the structures of many work environments can contribute to the growth of these problems, Adnews called Portuga to a special conversation about mental health and the consequences that this topic can bring to work.
Check out the conversation with Daniel Portuga:
Portuga spoke about the environment that is created in many workplaces, especially the one with which he has the most experience: advertising. The determination of short deadlines and very high demands, many times seeming beyond the possible, creates a structure that favors and makes possible the alienation of personal life by work.
“When you work with extremely short deadlines, you have a deadline to meet that demand, but humanly it is practically impossible. So you end up going over things and yourself to be able to deliver. If you have to do a campaign with a certain budget and certain people, and I deliver it in a week, I will need more things from my personal life to make that delivery.”
In addition, it was also discussed how much the work denies the emotional part within its structures. During the conversation, an important question was raised: employees who feel less emotional impact tend to be preferred within certain companies?
“There is a survival factor, the customer himself has it, and it is a chain reaction: the final end ends up suffering more. Especially those who work with creation have a very emotional part, so you are very passionate about many things. You have a rational part, what your job is worth and your survival, but you also have an emotional part, which is “how much longer can you do this?”
And of course, the future is what matters most. During the conversation, Portuga spoke about how he sees the current situation compared to his experiences, and if he sees changes coming ahead, in environments where mental health has its space of increasing importance.
“Things are changing. I come from a generation that if you’re doing it part time, you’re unmotivated, but things are changing. The Post in White project itself is not about normalizing anxiety, but about normalizing the discussion about anxiety.”
He even completes by talking about how mental health should be an issue addressed far beyond the human resources department:
Mental health for companies is not a matter of HR, it is a matter of company structure. The mental health of its employees is an issue that has to be part of the company’s purpose, because it is very simple if the employee is burnout to be sent to HR. But things are changing, especially after the pandemic, many scenarios have changed.”
