As of yesterday, January 11th, Xbox Insiders have noticed that their Xbox Series X|S consoles have automatically updated to the shutdown option. This power settings update will reduce power consumption while the console is off, without affecting performance, gameplay or the console’s ability to receive system, app and game updates overnight. It is the most sustainable power option for the console and uses up to 20 times less electricity than snooze mode.
Xbox Insiders who use shutdown (energy saving) as their power option and have their Series X|S consoles configured to support automatic updates will also receive an update that makes their consoles carbon aware. That means reducing carbon footprints by optimizing updates and download times for when the console can use more renewable energy within your local electricity grid.
For every two consoles that switch to shutdown mode (energy saving) we will save the carbon equivalent of a tree planted and cultivated for a decade. (Based on an average of Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles in shutdown (power save) mode for 20 hours a day over a year, actual power savings vary by console and other factors using EPA calculator.
The Xbox became the first gaming console to offer carbon-conscious game downloads and upgrades. For now, the update is only available to Console Insiders, but all users will have a chance to update their consoles with the Carbon Awareness Update soon.
Additional points:
- More sustainability with “Active Hours” and Sleep Mode. Another power setting update starting January 11th for Xbox Insiders is the “Active Hours” feature. Users who select snooze will now be able to adjust their console’s active hours. Your Xbox will start quickly and be available for remote activation during selected active hours.
- Xbox continues to explore options for all players to reduce their marks on the environment. Xbox One consoles will begin to see new power mode options, including shutdown (power saver) starting January 11th. Xbox One consoles will feature several options to test and inform players. This effort is to provide players on Xbox One consoles with an opportunity to provide feedback based on their experience.
Xbox is also encouraging all gamers to learn more about available power setting options. Non-Insider players who want to tweak their settings to get the best pre-update power saving option can go to Settings > General > Power Options. This will help save power and allow for carbon-conscious upgrades on your Xbox.
