In my childhood/adolescence, I loved listening to Sidney Magal’s songs. As an adult, I got to see one of his shows – and I had a great time. And Magal is completing 50 years of career, celebrating a lot. There is a fiction film based on his life scheduled to open this year, My Blood Boils for You, with Filipe Bragança playing the singer. There is no official release date yet. And there’s also the documentary Call me and I’ll godirected by Joana Mariani, which premieres today (12) in theaters.
Born Sidney Magalhães, Magal opens up in the first person in this documentary. He speaks from his childhood to the present. He is going through important moments in his career and his marriage to Magali West. The title comes from one of Magal’s most famous songs, which served as the opening theme for the telenovela. Queen of Scrap, in 1990. The film reviews his more than 50-year career and shows the man behind the artist. The singer tells unusual stories. An example is when he asked Vinicius de Moraes to compose a song for him. Or even the way he chose his stage name in Italy. And also the rejection by Globo, which later called him for a music program.
Director Joana Mariani met the singer at the beginning of the 2000s, during the filming of the music video for the song, directed by Pedro Becker and in which she works as assistant director. From then on, she never lost touch with the artist and his family. “At each meeting, the life stories, experiences and ‘stories’ told by him fascinated everyone. Sidney Magalhães is a delightful figure. It is very different from the character he created for his artistic life, Sidney Magal”, says the filmmaker.
An interview with Magal
The documentary entertains, it has several moments of the artist’s career. It has several musical numbers and provides the opportunity to get to know the idol more closely. It is especially interesting as a study of a time very different from the one we live in today. I had the opportunity to talk with Magal and Joana. See the interview here:
