Ubisoft, one of the biggest video game developers in the world, has faced a series of highly publicized hurdles in recent weeks, especially after the release of disappointing financial results. Now, the company’s CEO has apologized for an internal email he sent to all employees, after some criticized the tone used in the text.
According to Kotaku, that email included a part where Guillemot told employees that “the ball is on your sideo,” which was widely seen as management shirking its responsibility for the company’s recent problems. Ubisoft Paris employees have announced that they are planning a strike in response to the comments. At a recent meeting, an employee submitted the following question to management:
“The ball is now in our court – for years it has been in your court, so why did you handle the ball so badly, then we workers have to fix it? for you?”
This issue apparently prompted Guillemot’s apology. At that meeting he said: “I have heard your feedback and I am sorry that it was perceived this way.“. He also added that he intends to transmit the “talent and energy” of the company’s staff, referring to its production process as a “group trip”. Several sources told Kotaku that the apology failed to assuage their concerns about the company’s direction and that the meeting went “weak in details“.
Despite being one of the most well-known video game producers in the world, Ubisoft has been experiencing difficulties in recent months. The company recently canceled at least three unannounced games and claimed that games like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023 underperformed financial expectations. One of the announced projects that was canceled was likely Project Q, a “team battle arena game” that was going through a testing phase.
Ubisoft has also delayed Skull & Bones yet again, a project that was initially envisioned as a spinoff of Assassin’s Creed IV, released a decade ago. This also came after the company canceled several high-profile projects in mid-2022, including Ghost Recon: Frontline and Splinter Cell VR.
