Brazilian cinema discovered comedies, which represent the largest share of its box office. That way, it’s almost a certainty of success. And now there’s another one coming to theaters. IT IS I’m hot, which decides to mix comedy with a supernatural touch. Something along the lines of The ghosts have fun, or Beetlejuice.
Fervo is a remake of the movie Poltergay, which I never got to watch. Three ghosts become trapped in a house and haunt each new resident. That is until a couple of architects, Leo and Mariana (Felipe Abib and Georgianna Goes), moved to the place and decided to renovate it, revitalizing it. That’s when they end up discovering that the mansion was the site of an old concert hall called “Fervo” and go through a series of misunderstandings with the ghosts.
It must be said that the story takes a while to get started. It wastes a lot of time presenting the problem of Leo and Mariana’s marriage. And even those nonsense of “what is that noise?”. However, from the moment Leo starts to see the ghosts, things get better. That’s when each one goes in search of those he left behind. It’s not even that funny, but it feels truer than the first part.
All of the cast are fine, with obvious emphasis on the two main characters, Felipe Abib and Georgianna Góes (does anyone remember Adolescent Confessions?). But what made me happiest was seeing veterans like Suely Franco, Rosi Campos, Tonico Pereira and especially Joana Fomm in special appearances. Like Death, Joana is sensational, in top form. What is certain is that, in the end, Fervo is one of those little comedies like Session in the Afternoon, which you probably won’t even remember the next day. But it’s cute.
