Of course, everyone was surprised by Andrea Riseborough’s nomination in the Best Actress category for the film To Leslie. Especially since it left out sure bets like Viola Davis (King Woman) e Danielle Deadwyler Till). And let’s face it, practically nobody saw the movie. When it was released in the US it brought in just $27,000 at the box office. But, a very strong campaign using people like Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Palthrow, Edward Norton, among others, ended up getting her a nomination. There is even a rumor that the Academy would be reassessing the type of lobbying that was done for the actress.
Apparently, there is a rule against this type of campaign (seriously?), and the movement in favor of Andrea would have violated this. Honestly, I don’t think anything will happen with Andrea’s nomination, if this is really true. But they will likely implement new, clearer rules for the future.
To Leslie
So far it seems that there is no forecast, nor distributor for the film in Brazil. It’s one of those small, very cheap films that has a small audience. In the story, Leslie, an alcoholic and manipulative woman, who became a celebrity when she won $190,000 in the local lottery. But, she ended up squandering everything she earned on drugs and alcohol. Currently, Leslie lives in squalor and leads an itinerant life in motels and on the streets. But after being kicked out of a residential motel, she decides to reunite with her twenty-year-old son, James. He allows her to live with him, on condition that she doesn’t drink. But the woman fails to keep her promise and is soon stealing money, bottles of alcohol and whatever else she can find. When her life hits rock bottom, the presence of a stranger will make her re-evaluate things and try to rebuild her life.
I hope we can see To Leslie before the Oscars – maybe some streaming doesn’t qualify? In the meantime, here are some movies and series with Andrea that are available on streaming.
Amsterdam – HBO Max
Amsterdam takes place in the 1930s. It tells the story of three close friends: two soldiers and a nurse (Christian Bale, John David Washington and Margot Robbie). They met during the first war, and made a pact to always protect each other as a trio. Only they end up getting involved in a murder case, of which they become the main suspects. To prove that they are not involved in the death, the group will have the help of allies to try to investigate the crime. In this way, they intend to protect themselves and face the real killer. Only, again by chance, the three friends discover one of the most surprising plots in American history. And the most unbelievable thing is that it is partly based on a true story. Andrea plays the wife of Christian Bale’s character.
Matilda – O Musical – Netflix
This is an adaptation of the Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical, based on the 1996 film. It tells the story of a lonely and extraordinary little girl who uses her fertile imagination to change her life and transform the world around her. Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir) is a bright six-year-old. She grew up with rude and ignorant parents. Both ignore their daughter, to the point of forgetting to enroll her in school. In this way, Matilda is always at home or in the bookstore, where she usually stimulates her imagination. After a series of strange events occur at home, Matilda discovers that she has magical powers. Her father then decides to send her to school. The place is controlled with an iron fist by director Agatha Trunchbull (Emma Thompson). Matilda feels good only next to the teacher Honey (Lashana Lynch), who tries to help her as much as possible. Andrea plays Matilda’s mother in the film.
Nocturnal Animals – Prime Video/ Globoplay/ Lionsgate Plus
The thriller portrays the story of a couple separated for 20 years. Susan (Amy Adams) is a Los Angeles art dealer living a privileged but incomplete life with her husband Hutton Morrow (Armie Hammer). On a weekend when Hutton must leave for one of her frequent business trips, she receives an unexpected package: a book written by her ex-husband, Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal), and dedicated to her. A violent and heartbreaking publication, which moves her and makes her question some of her life choices. Andrea plays Alessia, married to Carlos (Michael Sheen), who is gay.
WE: The Romance of the Century – HBO Max
This was Andrea’s most important role, until To Leslie. The film is directed by Madonna, and tells the story of the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward (Elizabeth II’s uncle). The Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII (James d’Arcy), is first in line to succeed the British crown. Only he meets and falls in love with Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough), a married American. When Edward takes the throne he starts to suffer pressure not to marry Wallis. Especially since she’s not English and has two divorces under her belt. To be with his great love, he renounces the throne, which is now occupied by his brother Bertie (Laurence Fox). In 1998, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with the love story between Edward and Wallis. She works on the preparation of a large auction of the couple’s objects and often fantasizes about what their life would be like. However, in real life Wally faces several problems in his marriage to William (Richard Coyle).
To Death of Stalin – Telecine/ Globoplay
I love this movie! Soviet Union, 1953. After the unexpected death of icon Josef Stalin (Adrian McLoughlin), the top echelon of the Communist Party committee finds itself in chaotic times to decide who will succeed the Soviet leader. And also which directions the nation will follow from then on, a huge dispute that involves even the complex heirs of the politician. Stalin’s children are played by Andrea ee Rupert Friend (Homeland)
