Gladiator 2 now has a release date, as Paramount has put the sequel on schedule for November 22, 2024. The sequel will be released over 24 years later. It’s not quite as much as 36-year-old fans have hoped for Top Gun: Maverick, though. Ridley Scott, who directed the first film, is returning for the sequel. Paul Mescal, who starred in Aftersun and is up for an Oscar this year, will star in Gladiator 2.
Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s Luciilla in the original film, according to a report. Lucius, the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix in the original) is now grown up and ready for his own adventure. Maximus, played by Russell Crowe in the first Gladiator, killed Commodus and saved Lucius before dying.
Plot details for Gladiator 2 remain under wraps. What we do know, however, is that the screenplay was written by David Scarpa (All the Money in the World, The Man in the High Castle).
2000’s Gladiator was a huge critical and commercial success, grossing $500 million at the worldwide box office and earning 12 Academy Award nominations. The film was nominated for five awards, including best film of the year.
