A PepsiCo, in line with its global sustainability goals, launches a prototype of a sustainable truck body, made with recycled plastic, more specifically BOPP and PET bottles, materials used in the packaging of snacks and soft drinks of its brands.
This is a pioneering initiative in the market and is part of the company’s strategic transformation, PepsiCo Positive, which aims to generate sustainable value through three pillars: Positive Agriculture, Positive Value Chain and Positive Choices.
The agenda consolidates the company’s actions throughout its production chain and places sustainability at the heart of its business, which includes the development of the circular economy and the reinforcement of its sustainable fleet, which is now one of the largest in the consumer goods sector. consumption in Brazil and worldwide.
The prototype was developed based on recycled packaging of the company’s products in the composition. For the manufacture of the bodywork, the BOPP and PET packages went through a chemical process that, mixed with other components, reduces the amount of fiberglass used in the original formula.
This material has undergone several tests in order to ensure its safety and durability, including artificial aging estimated at 10 years, elasticity and heat conduction, obtaining positive results and demonstrating the possibility of using it on a large scale in your fleet.
About 3 kg of BOPP plastic packaging was used for the project – which represents about 750 units of snack bags, and 18 kg of PET plastic – approximately 368 bottles.
New experiments are being carried out to further increase the use of these recyclables in the fiber composition, which can consume up to 99% less energy in kW/h in its production compared to a conventional aluminum body.
“Actions like this reinforce our commitment to sustainability and also to the circular economy of plastic, a material for which we seek alternatives so that it does not become waste and can be re-signified. With the sustainable body design alone, we intend to recycle approximately 5 tons of plastics in a year.” says Anderson Pinheiro, Transport Director at PepsiCo Brazil.
PepsiCo expands fleet of electric vehicles and CNG
PepsiCo also announces the purchase of twenty electric and five CNG-powered trucks to reinforce its sustainable fleet. Nineteen electric vehicles are from JAC Motors, model iEV 1200T, of which the company had already acquired ten units in 2020 and one from Volkswagen, model e-Delivery11, the first 100% national electric truck.
The 5 vehicles powered by CNG (vehicle natural gas), or biomethane gas, are from SCANIA and are the same model that the company acquired last year for 18 trucks. The company was the first to use natural gas powered trucks and one of the pioneers in the use of electric trucks in its fleet, which reinforces its commitment to mitigating the impacts caused by CO2 emissions in the atmosphere and to sustainability throughout its value chain.
All these actions are in line with PepsiCo’s global goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% throughout its production chain by 2030.
