This year the Oscars have some certainties. Best film, direction and supporting actor will definitely go to All in Everywhere at the same time. The best animation award should go to Pinocchio, by William Del Toro (Netflix). And the best song will probably be Naatu Naatu by RRR (Netflix). But there are several categories that it is difficult to define who will take the statuette. Mainly actors and actresses. Brendan Fraser or Austin Butler? Cate Blanchett or Michelle Yeoh?
Anyway, here are five movie tips for you to watch so you can discuss with your friends at the time of the pool.
Everything Everywhere at the Same Time – Prime Video
My bet is that he will be the great champion of the night. If you follow the Hollywood Blog, you already know that I’m not a big fan of Everything and Everywhere at Once. It’s definitely the craziest and most surprising movie I’ve seen in a while. I think he gets lost towards the end (with the Donut story). but it has great performances, like those of Key Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu. In fact, despite being very fond of Michelle Yeoh, I think her performance is the weakest in the film – and also among the nominees for the award for actress Nominated for a film , direction, actress (Michelle Yeoh), supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), screenplay, soundtrack, costumes and editing.
Elvis – HBO Max
If I were an Academy voter, it would be my choice. I voted it the best movie of last year on the Hollywood Blog list. I think it effectively tells a good story. It has an excellent reconstruction of the period, sensational performances (yes, Tom Hanks too), photography, soundtrack, montage, everything perfect. But in the real world, it has no chance of winning the Oscar for best picture. But it’s a favorite for Hair and Makeup. And then there’s Austin Butler, who might win Best Actor. In addition to film, actor and hair and makeup, Elvis competes in the categories of sound, photography, costume (he is also a favorite), montage and production design.
The whale – Cinema
But halfway through, there’s Brendan Fraser, and his career comeback story. The Academy loves that, and it can reward you. The film is based on the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter (also the author of the screenplay). In it, Charlie is a 270 kg teacher who can’t get off the couch. And he is also fraught with emotional problems. Then comes the time when Charlie has to confront his past, namely his daughter and his ex-wife. He looks sensational! In addition to Brendan, the film is up for supporting actress (Hong Chau) and hair and makeup.
Warehouse – Cinema
Cate Blanchett is always sensational. And for her, Tar is worth seeing. However, the film is long, disjointed. The script has monstrous holes, and could have easily cut at least 40 minutes of the story. Director Todd Field fails to engage. He seeks a distance, as if he were saying “look at how great an artist I am, how special my film is”. And it’s not. Warehouse sinks even deeper towards the end of the film, when Lydia Tár leaves for Asia. He competes for film, direction, actress, screenplay, photography and editing.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Disney Plus
The film has some good moments, but overall, it’s a bit slow. It has an excellent start, already showing the death of T-Challa by a mysterious illness. It’s impossible not to get emotional. From there, the film begins the completely headless story, which will put the kingdom of Wakanda in danger due to the threat of the underwater beings of Talokan. However, beyond the beginning, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever there are other positive things. The biggest one is Angela Bassett. I’m about to see someone who passes as much royalty and strength as the actress. In addition to the supporting actress award, she also competes for visual effects, hair and makeup and costumes.
Nothing New on the Front – Netflix
The adaptation of the book by Erich Maria Remarque has already won two previous versions. The first won the Oscar for best picture there in 1930 (and four other awards). This German version is difficult to see, because of the war story, but it is very well filmed. The photography and soundtrack are sensational. Should take the Oscar for foreign film. Also nominated for film, adapted screenplay, visual effects, photography, art direction, hair and makeup, soundtrack and sound.
And still…
And on Sunday (the 12th), follow the Oscars with me from their red carpet, starting at 6:30 pm, on the social networks of the Hollywood Blog. I adore Oscar, and I wait for you to comment every moment with me. The Oscars will air on TNT and HBO Max, and the red carpet on E!.
