Directed and written by Beatriz Seigner and Maíra Bühler, “Friends” was one of the three awarded projects at the first edition of “Seriesmakers”, a Series Mania initiative with the aim of encouraging film directors to explore the TV universe. The Brazilian filmmakers took home a financial incentive of €20,000, provided by the Kirch Foundation, in collaboration with the Beta Group and the HFF (University of TV and Cinema of Munich). The three winning series were announced this week during a festival forum.
Based in Lilie, France, Europe’s biggest television event received over 170 entries from 54 different countries. Among the registered directors were several important names, with passages in the main film festivals, including Juho Kuosmanen – winner of the Cannes Grand Prix – and César Díaz – winner of the Caméra D’Or. Of the 170 projects, only 10 were selected for a 4-month mentorship program, with the directors of series such as Game of Thrones, The Crown, House of Cards, In Treatmeant, The Girl from Oslo, Berlin Babilon, Spencer, among others. others. Maíra Bühler is a director and screenwriter. His latest film, “Diz a Ela Que Me Viu Chorar” (2019) won the Best Film Award at the international competitive screening of the Olhar de Cinema festival, the Special Jury Prize at the Havana Film Festival and the Best Ibero American Film at the International festival from Uruguay, was awarded at the Cinéma Du Réel, in France, among others. She is also one of the directors of the film “A Vida Privada dos Hipopótamos” (2014) which premiered at FiD – Festival de Marseille and won the Best Editing Award at the Festival do Rio and the documentary Elevado 3.5, winner of Best Brazilian Film at É Tudo Verdade in 2007. He is currently developing the script for his next film, “Um Casamento”, awarded by the Hubert Bals Fund. She is also a series scriptwriter and has lately been working on international co-productions with Gaumont.
