Macbeth is probably the most difficult play to see written by William Shakespeare. No wonder it is called cursed. She deals with horrible feelings like envy, selfishness, lack of empathy. But for that very reason, it is extremely fascinating. Joel Coen chose to transport the play to film/streaming as his first solo work. That is, without brother Ethan. He made a brilliant movie. But, like the play itself, it’s not easy to see. Macbeth’s Tragedy debuted today (14) on Apple TV Plus.
Lord Macbeth (Denzel Washington) is returning home from a war, where he has made himself a hero. Along the way, three witches approach him and tell him that he will be the next King of Scotland. Upon breaking the news to his wife (Frances McDormand), they plot the assassination of the country’s current king and thus secure Macbeth’s reign. And so begins the tragedy involving murder, madness, and ambition.
What did I think of Macbeth’s Tragedy?
The first thing that catches your eye is the beauty of black and white photography. Fully stylized, clearly made in the studio, it’s a masterpiece. Visually the film is stupendous, with its dark corners, an uncomfortable minimalism and totally perfect. As a curiosity, everything was shot in just 36 days.
The dialogues are in Old English, that is, if it weren’t for the subtitles, even those who are fluent would have difficulty following along. But it’s wonderful to see these actors saying those words so dramatically and effectively. Of course, Denzel rocks. He is already a much older Macbeth (unlike the play). But it has a strength, a desperation, that sends a shiver down your spine. He makes it very clear that he sees this as his last chance. Denzel is up for Critics Choice and is likely among the Oscar finalists. He’s not the favourite, for now it’s Will Smith for King Richard. But who knows what might happen until Oscar day.
As Macbeth’s wife, Frances McDormand works. It does something a little different than what we’re used to seeing – always the same role, in my opinion. But really the one who marked me the most was Kathryn Hunter, as the witch. An actress who is more dedicated to the theater, Kathryn has a terrifying performance, the likes of which I have never seen. I hope you get an Oscar nomination.
As I said, Macbeth’s Tragedy it’s not a movie for everyone. None of the previous film versions, whether by Orson Welles, Kurosawa, Polaski, were box office successes. Quite the opposite. I wish I had seen this magnificent photograph on a movie screen. But I’m glad Apple TV Plus gave us the opportunity to see this production, even on a smaller screen. It was really worth it!
