Regulators in Italy issued a temporary ban on the artificial intelligence that has been gaining traction on the internet recently, ChatGPT, last Friday, effective immediately. The move was taken due to privacy concerns, while the same bodies said they had opened an investigation into how OpenAI, the American company behind the popular chatbot, uses data.
Italy’s data protection agency said users lacked information about the collection of their data and that a breach in ChatGPT was reported on March 20. “There appears to be no legal basis for the massive collection and processing of personal data to ‘train’ the algorithms the platform relies on.”, said the agency.
The Italian regulatory body also expressed concern about the lack of age verification for ChatGPT users. He argued that “exposes children to receiving responses that are absolutely inappropriate for their age and conscience”. The platform must be for users aged 13+, she noted.
The data protection agency said that OpenAI would be blocked from processing Italian users’ data until “respect the privacy regulation”. OpenAI has 20 days to communicate the measures it will take to comply with Italy’s data rules. Otherwise, you could face a fine of up to €20 million (R$110 million), or up to 4% of your annual global turnover.
