TikTok, the most popular free short video app of recent times, has made headlines in recent days not for its content, but for alleged leaks to the Chinese government. Its boss, Shou Zi Chew, appeared before US politicians in Congress, where he answered hostile questions about Chinese parent company ByteDance and how much access China has to the app’s data.
However, TikTok is far from the only Chinese-owned mobile app to conquer Western markets. Analytics firm Apptopia estimates that another three of the top 10 free mobile apps in the US are also owned by Chinese companies. Two of them are also among the most downloaded in the UK.
Check out the most successful Chinese apps around the world:
Capcut
Video editing app CapCut is often touted as a companion editor for TikTok content creators and was downloaded 13 million times in February alone, according to Sensor Tower.
The video editing tool is optimized for mobile editing on the go and offers a variety of features designed to make your videos go viral, such as adding popular music, filters and special effects. CapCut is also owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance.
Shein
Shein is a global fashion brand founded in 2012 and now valued at nearly $15 billion, according to Forbes. It was founded by Chinese billionaire Chris Xu and is headquartered in Singapore.
A quick search of the #Shein hashtag on TikTok and Instagram will reveal hundreds of videos of popular influencers bragging about their recent #Sheinhaul. He uses social media to target GenZ users with hundreds of new products daily at low prices.
Ago
It’s been less than a year since this shopping app debuted in the US, but it quickly overtook Amazon and Walmart. The online superstore sells everything from clothing to electronics and allows consumers to bypass the warehouses and buy directly from the Chinese manufacturer.
Prices are so low that many Americans were looking to find out how reliable the online store is after the company ran an ad during this year’s Super Bowl.
The company is headquartered in Boston, MA but is a subsidiary of PDD Holdings, a Chinese online retail giant specializing in direct-to-consumer products.
The success of Chinese apps in the US is due in part to the fierce competition that exists in its home market, where US apps are banned, say some experts.
These Chinese companies are also leaders in developing highly customized recommendation algorithms to suit users’ needs, such as those used by TikTok and the instant messaging app WeChat.
