Elon Musk warned in a recent interview that artificial intelligence could lead to the “destruction of civilization”, yet he remains deeply involved in the growth of AI through his various companies, including a new venture by the billionaire.
According to Elon Musk:
“AI is more dangerous than, say, a poorly managed aircraft design or the production of a bad car, in the sense that it has the potential, however low one considers that probability, it has the potential to destroy civilization.”
Elon Musk has warned several times recently about the dangers of AI, amid a proliferation of products using this type of technology for general consumer use, including from tech giants like Google and Microsoft. Last month, Elon Musk also joined a group of other tech leaders in signing an open letter calling for a six-month pause in the “out of control” race to develop AI.
Musk said last Monday that he supports government regulation of AIs, although “don’t be fun to be regulated”, in the words of the billionaire. The tycoon’s argument is that when AI “is in control”, it may be too late to regulate.
“A regulatory agency needs to start with a group that initially seeks information about technologies that use AI and then solicits industry input and proposes rules.”
Looking back at older interviews, Elon Musk has been warning about AI for years, something he acknowledged in a tweet over the weekend, even though he is also part, through investments in his vast corporate empire, of the “arms race” for technologies using AI .
Tesla, for example, relies so heavily on artificial intelligence that it organizes an annual AI day to showcase its work. Elon Musk was a founding member of OpenAI, the company behind products like ChatGPT (Musk said the evolution of OpenAI “it’s not what i intended”.) On Twitter, Musk said in a tweet last month that he plans to “use AI to detect and highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform.”
