The main American basketball league, the NBA (National Basketball Association) decided to honor one of the greatest idols in American history: Martin Luther King Jr. The idea did not come by chance since yesterday, January 17th, was the day of celebration of MLK in the country.
The date is always celebrated on the third Monday of January, the day close to the birthday of the pastor and political activist, January 15th. The national holiday is one of three made in commemoration of a person’s accomplishments and was made official by then-President Ronald Reagan in 1983.
In the video, former black basketball player Dwayne Wadde, 40, echoes the teachings of Martin Luther King. The video shows how future generations can be impacted by thinking, excerpts that celebrate King are broadcast in parallel to the former athlete’s narration.

Martin Luther King’s participation in American history is more important than one can imagine. The activist is responsible for fighting for the civil rights of the American black population in the 60s, when racial segregation and discrimination were even stronger in the country.
It is worth remembering that the NBA is one of the most prominent spaces of the American black community. In a recent estimate, over 74% of the league’s athletes are black. However, it is extremely important to point out that most technicians and managers are still white, a factor that points to a structural problem to be solved.
