Director Rene Sampaio had already made a film based on a song by Legião Urbana. IT’S Western Caboclo, available on Globoplay, based on the homonymous song. The same Rene then decided to take the most iconic song by Legião, Eduardo e Monica, and also turned into a movie. Eduardo e Monica, the film, opens this Thursday in theaters. It’s true to the music, cute, without being clingy, and a delight to watch.
In the story, Eduardo, played by Gabriel Leone, meets Monica (Alice Braga) at a strange party with weird people. They are completely different, apart from the age difference between the two, different signs, different tastes. In the eyes of other people, it seems that love between the two will never go beyond a few dates. But who will one day say that there is no reason in the things done by the heart?
What did I think of Eduardo e Monica?
We’ve been hearing about the movie for a long time. To give you an idea, it was finished in 2019. But then the pandemic came, and the rest is history. It’s easy to understand why the producers decided to wait. That’s because the film works and deserves to be seen in the cinema. I was never one of Legião Urbana’s crazed fans, but I’ve always loved the song. Eduardo e Monica. For those who lived through those years in which the song was released, the film has an even greater appeal, as it stirs the affective memory of many. It even makes a great recreation of the period, but it doesn’t sound dated for today.
The good thing about the film is that it transports this romance to the screen in a delicate, fun, and not overly exaggerated way. Yes, just like in the song, Monica wants to see a Godard movie, and Eduardo is taking a college entrance exam. We get to know a little more about Monica, things weren’t included in the song. This is good for the story. There are still references to the politics of the time, when the country was emerging from the dictatorship.
Alice Braga took a break from her Hollywood career, where she recently Suicide squad, and is also a producer on the film. It works well by presenting a complex and fascinating Monica. But who really conquers is Gabriel Leone, who convinces perfectly as a 16-year-old. He also knows how to demonstrate how Eduardo matured, in relation to Monica and life. With the two of them, we make a delicious foray into this romance that, like everyone else, is full of mishaps. But, he completes her and vice versa, like beans and rice. That is, the letter is true. Who will one day say that there is reason in the things done by the heart?
