The biggest audiovisual award in the country, the event will be held in August, in Rio de Janeiro, and will honor filmmaker Vladimir Carvalho
The Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts announced the date and location of the 22nd edition of the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix. The event will take place on August 23, at Cidade das Artes, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The biggest audiovisual award in the country, which annually brings together hundreds of filmmakers, actors and professionals from the sector, will be broadcast live throughout the country on the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts channel on Youtube and on Canal Brasil.
This year’s honoree is filmmaker Vladimir Carvalho. Born in Paraíba, the documentary filmmaker has a vast body of work and more than twenty films, including ‘O País de São Saruê’ (1971), ‘Quilombo’ (1975), ‘Conterrâneos Velhos de Guerra’ (2001) and ‘Rock Brasília – Golden Age’ (2011). Today, at the age of 88, Vladimir remains a reference and inspiration for new generations of documentary filmmakers. His productions, loaded with elements of Cinema Novo, tell the story of our people, allowing Brazil to recognize itself on screen.
At the ceremony, which will be artistically directed by Batman Zavareze and scripted by Bebeto Abrantes, 32 awards will be announced for feature films, short films and independent Brazilian series. The first round of voting began last Friday (5th) and continues until May 22nd. In this phase, the members of the Brazilian Academy of Cinema vote, among all the subscribers, on the titles and professionals that will remain as finalists in all categories. The five finalists in each category are expected to be announced at the end of May.
In the second round, professionals associated with the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts elect the winners. At this stage, scheduled to take place in June, the public can also vote through the Academy’s website in the categories Best Fiction Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film and Best Comedy Feature Film, which compete for the disputed award for Best Film by the Popular Jury. This year, the winner of the Best Comedy Feature Film category will be decided exclusively by the public in open voting. As is tradition, the opening of all envelopes with the winners will be live.
For this edition, 85 fiction feature films, 35 documentary feature films, 6 children’s feature films, 5 animation feature films, 29 fiction series for Open TV and Pay TV/OTT, 31 documentary series for TV Pay/OTT, 4 animation series for Pay/OTT TV, 18 animated short films, 23 documentary shorts, 20 fiction shorts, 12 Ibero-American films and 40 international films.
The Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro 2023 has the support of the City of Rio de Janeiro, through RioFilme, a body that integrates the Municipal Secretariat of Culture, and investigation and monitoring by PwC Brasil.
