This week, ‘Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse’ opened in theaters. Most of the critics loved it, but I thought it was just “okay”. Inferior to the first animated film of 2018, which even won an Oscar (see review here). But, what left me more surprised was, in fact, to verify that this animation can be considered as “Spider-Man 10”. Yes, because ever since Tobey Maguire was bitten by a spider in ‘Spider-Man’, from 2002, the story was told nine different times. That’s not counting Tom Holland’s appearances in other Marvel movies.
So, I decided to make a list of curiosities about the franchise’s films since the first one premiered. But before…

#1 Jake Gyllenhaal almost got the lead role over Andrew Garfield. But, he hurt his back and he wasn’t satisfied with the fee offered either. Years later, he was the villainous Quentin Back in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’.
#2 The three main couples from the films’ three casts fell in love during filming: Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, and Tom Holland and Zendaya. This last couple is together to this day.
#3 Tobey Maguire defeated Jude Law and Freddie Prinze Jr. for the role of the original trilogy.
#4 In the first film, the classic scene in which Peter Parker holds Mary Jane and the contents of the tray was not the result of special effects. It was made by Tobey Maguire himself. There were 156 takes to get her perfect.
#5 2002’s ‘Spider-Man’ was the first film in history to make over $100 million in its opening weekend.
#6 Robert Downey Jr. earned $10 million for his 7.5-minute appearance in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.
#7 Several actors turned down the role of the Green Goblin, which ended up in the hands of Willem Dafoe. Among them, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey and John Malkovich.
#8 During the filming of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man: The Rise of Electro’, a taxi ran over Andrew Garfield’s foot.
#9 Before he died, Stan Lee shot a scene for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’. He plays the owner of a shop that sells all kinds of hero items. But, the directors wanted to pay an even greater tribute to this Marvel legend, and decided to include him in every train that appeared in the film.
#10 JK Simmons learned that he had landed the role of J. Jonah Jameson through a fan who congratulated him on the win.
