With the objective of evaluating the relevance of sustainable packaging and consumer involvement with the theme, iFood, a Brazilian technology company, has just released a survey conducted by the Opinion Box Institute, which points out that 76% of customers consider it important to have some seal on the packaging to prove sustainability. In addition, 54% of the people surveyed say they prioritize orders from restaurants that have sustainable packaging for shipping food. The results were obtained after online interviews with 1,112 people, who ordered at least one food at delivery in the 30 days before data collection, carried out between March 8 and 17, 2023.
When we talk about material, more than half of consumers believe that paper and compostable packaging are the most sustainable. They are also preferred by 41% of respondents. Regarding rejection, among the 71% who reject some type of packaging, the one they least like is aluminum.
As for the characteristic of the packaging, 94% of people agree that the seal is the most important. The way the packaging is disposed of is also relevant to 8 out of 10 consumers in terms of ease.
Commitment
The survey is part of iFood’s efforts to build a more sustainable future. Among the measures being taken by the company to achieve this goal is the public commitment to zero plastic pollution by 2025.
“We will accelerate the commitment to reduce plastic in the delivery, through adherence to sustainable packaging by restaurants and customer awareness. For this, we are using our technology to create new solutions in packaging that have been tested and approved by us, ensuring safe use and an excellent experience for the end customer, in addition to a lower cost for the restaurant”, points out Gustavo Vitti, Vice President of People and Sustainability of iFood.
The collected data serves as a basis for the restaurants’ awareness of how the consumer perceives and desires the sustainability of the business.
In order to change the current scenario based on these results, the company started the ‘Hamburger on Paper’ campaign, with the launch of sustainable packaging, in partnership with the largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging in Brazil , Kablin.
In addition to being sustainable, they are innovative, recyclable and biodegradable, and feature competitive prices, minimizing costs and financial impacts on partner restaurants. About 30 hamburgers across the country will receive the new packaging for this first phase of the project.
Responsibility for offering sustainable packaging
For 52% of consumers, restaurants are responsible for initiating this movement towards the use of more sustainable packaging. However, if it is necessary to increase the price of the meal to change the packaging, the data show that this contribution can cause a reduction in the quantity sold.
Overall, on average, 60% of respondents answered that “yes, they would pay R$ 2.00 more to receive their order at the delivery in sustainable packaging”. Although sustainability is an important aspect, when we talk about packaging for deliveryonly 28% of respondents have already stopped being customers of a restaurant due to the use of packaging that is harmful to the environment.
