The data was presented in the survey “Reflections on mapping LGBTQIA+ football collectives, events and supporters”
NIX Diversidade, with the support of Nike, pointed out that the number of LGBTQIAP+ sports collectives, as well as events and fans, increased in 2023. The data was presented in the research “Reflections on mapping LGBTQIA+ soccer collectives, events and fans “, who also pointed out that these collectives represent the main movement to expand access to sport.
According to the survey, the number of LGBTQIA+ sports collectives registered in the mapping, for example, increased from around 60 to 124, since 2022. Another identified advance was the holding of friendlies, meetings and tournaments for the practice of amateur and recreational sports.
“Last year we were able to carry out a historical rescue of sport in the country from the LGBTQIA+ perspective, in addition to the survey that indicated that 42.8% of the community does not have access to sports practices. Now with a better understanding of the dynamics of collectives, events and fans , we want to bring more light to the challenges and opportunities raised by the community”, said Fabrcio Addeo Ramos, director of Nix Diversidade.
The organization of football supporters, one of the main expressions of the participation of the LGBTQIA+ community, also helped to make the sport a national passion for all Brazilians.
“With the knowledge and experiences accumulated over these years of immersion for a better understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community’s relationship with sport in its different dimensions, we believe in the potential of these initiatives as one of the main strategies for the dissemination and appreciation of sports culture in the world. country,” said Bruno Teixeira, Senior Purpose Manager at Fisia, Official Nike Distributor in Brazil.
Together with collectives, the study also pointed to the growth of sporting events aimed at the LGBTQIA+ community in Brazil. Currently, events around the modalities of gaymada, football, vlei and handball stand out. Until 2022, 37 events were held in 20 sports, and the projection until 2024 (announced events) of 44 events in 29 sports.
Finally, the survey pointed out that another important movement for greater community inclusion in sports took place through the organization of football fans.
Although the men’s soccer environment is not inclusive, the desire to support the favorite team ends up going beyond prejudice, becoming a cultural manifestation and a cry of resistance. Although publicly present only on social media due to the fear of physical violence in stadiums, the existence of LGBTQIA+ supporters helps football advances to become, in fact, a sport for all.
In this context, the specific mapping of supporters emerges as a way to contribute to the visibility and growth of these initiatives.
