With the support of Nike, Nix Diversidade released, in 2022, an unprecedented mapping of inclusive collectives focused on the metropolitan region of São Paulo (SP), in which groups that promote access to sport for the LGBTQIAPN+ population were identified.
With the aim of making sport a daily habit for all people and reaffirming the commitment to encourage initiatives in the community, a new stage of mapping points to the emergence of new collectives around the country, in addition to including sporting events and football fans of the community.
“With the knowledge and experiences accumulated over these years of immersion, for a better understanding of the relationship of the LGBTQIAPN+ community with sport in its different dimensions, we believe in the potential of these initiatives as one of the main strategies in favor of the dissemination and appreciation of sports culture in the country”, comments Bruno Teixeira, senior manager of Purpose at Fisia, official Nike distributor in Brazil.
The recently launched study ‘Reflections on mapping LGBTQIAPN+ collectives, events and supporters’ shows that collectives represent the main movement to expand access to sport, evidencing a significant growth of these initiatives.
The number of LGBTQIAPN+ sports collectives registered in the mapping, for example, increased from around 60 to 124 since the first study, in 2022. Another identified advance is the holding of friendlies, meetings and tournaments for the practice of amateur and recreational sports. The organization of football fans, one of the main expressions of community participation, also helps to make the sport, in fact, the national passion of all Brazilians.
“Last year, we were able to carry out a historical rescue of sport in the country from the LGBTQIAPN+ perspective, in addition to the survey, which indicated that 42.8% of the community does not have access to sports practices. Now, with a better understanding of the dynamics of collectives, events and fans, we want to shed more light on the challenges and opportunities raised by the community”, adds Fabrício Addeo Ramos, director of Nix Diversidade.
Although the groups are mostly in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the collectives registered in the mapping cover the national territory and show the plurality of modalities. Of the 124 collectives mapped so far, they are present in eight states, including the Federal District, and divided into 24 modalities, some of which can practice even more than one. They are: 64 football, fut7 and futsal collectives; 50 volleyball teams; 13 gaymada collectives; 9 handball teams; and 3 teams for basketball, running and beach volleyball.
For a collective to be part of the mapping, it needs to be more than a gathering of people to practice physical activity or sports. The collective also needs to declare itself as part of an LGBTQIAPN+ segment, be formed predominantly by people from this social group, publicize its activities via some means of communication (social networks, websites, WhatsApp groups, among others) and practice activities organized with Frequency.
inclusive events
Simultaneously with the colectivos, sporting events aimed at the LGBTQIAPN+ community in Brazil are growing. Currently, events around the modalities of gaymada, football, volleyball and handball stand out. Until 2022, 37 events were held in 20 sports, and the projection until 2024 (announced events) is 44 events in 29 sports.
For the event to be registered in the mapping, it must be aimed mainly at the LGBTQIAPN+ community and take place in a playful and recreational format, or aim at competitiveness and performance, obligatorily contemplating a sport or physical activity.
Sporting events have become a trend towards the further development of sport within the community. That said, with the growth of collectives and events, sports practices with a focus more on fun and socialization have been gaining evidence, as was the case with gaymada.
Gayma?
A recreational activity that found perfect identification with the LGTBQIAPN+ community is gaymada, also known as burnt. One of the main indications of the growing adherence to this sport is the fact that it is inclusive of different bodies and genders, in addition to referring to an affective memory in school physical education, however, without gender separation and without the rigid rules of a sport. traditional.
Because it is easily performed on courts, squares and other public spaces, gaymada is one of the most democratic sports practices in the community. In addition, the activity allows the player to explore their performance in the game in different ways, enabling a performative expression of the participants and becoming a unique cultural expression.
the soccer fans
Another important movement to include the community in sports is through the organization of football fans, a sport that is part of many people’s daily lives and also helps to unite them socially.
Although the men’s soccer environment is not inclusive, the desire to root for the favorite team ends up going beyond prejudices, becoming a cultural manifestation and a cry of resistance. Although publicly present only on social networks, due to the fear of physical violence in stadiums, the existence of LGBTQIAPN+ supporters helps football advances to become, in fact, a sport for all. In this context, the specific mapping of supporters contributes to the visibility and growth of these initiatives.
