Entitled “Do not give way to racism”, the initiative aims to raise awareness among the population
The Government of Rio de Janeiro teamed up with Parque Bondinho Po de Acar to promote awareness-raising actions to combat racism in places with high circulation of people in the State.
This Monday (27), the campaign “Don’t give way to racism” took place at the cable car boarding point with the presence of activists from the black women’s movement.
The activities were aimed at visitors and tourists. In addition, the initiative also installed a banner with the campaign theme at the location with the aim of showing the public that the State of Rio de Janeiro does not tolerate racism and is attentive to cases to assist possible victims, in addition to working to publicize service and reception channels.
“The Secretariat has the Citizenship and Human Rights Hotline 0800 023 4567 and also the Superintendence for the Promotion of Racial Equality, with multidisciplinary, legal and psychosocial service to welcome and report cases of racism. The State Government is working on this awareness campaign to that the victim feels welcomed, and that society as a whole understands the importance of combating racist practices that remain rooted in everyday life”, highlighted the Secretary of State for Social Development and Human Rights, Rosangela Gomes.
A survey by the Public Security Institute (ISP) shows that, between August and September this year, 245 individuals were victims of racial discrimination in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The average is four new cases of racism every 24 hours.
