The Camp Nou, well-known Barcelona stadium will change its name to Spotify Camp Nou. The decision came after the music streaming company acquired the naming rights to the venue in a deal with the club. The 3-year contract was signed with values around €280 million.
Spotify had already been announced as a sponsor of the Catalan club, even having its logo stamped on the team’s shirts, both in the men’s and women’s divisions. However, the partnership with Barcelona has reached new levels, as announced this Wednesday, February 10, by Spanish radio RAC1.
The Catalan club closes the deal while going through a bad financial phase. In 2021, the club recorded a loss of more than 480 million euros, in addition to a considerable loss in the number of supporters. The partnership with the streaming brand can be an important element for the club to rebuild its financial sector.
The crisis at Barcelona, however, is not only financial, but also administrative. The new partnership with Spotify was not a decision that was unanimously welcomed behind the scenes at the club. CEO Ferran Reverter announced his departure from the post last Tuesday, the 9th, reporting personal problems, but the Spanish press claims that the decision is related to the new sponsorship.
The sale of naming rights for stadiums and arenas is not new in the world of football, both internationally and here in Brazil. Recently the same happened with Corinthians, which now has its stadium in Itaquera named NeoQuímica Arena.
Currently, the Barcelona squad has two Brazilian players: right-back Daniel Alves and goalkeeper, Neto. Further details on the partnership with Spotify and the sale of the Camp Nou naming rights are expected to come out soon.
