There are many people who don’t like Carnival, and like to take advantage of this holiday to catch up on series. If you do, here are my suggestions (they are all great) for spending these days of revelry on the couch.
The Woman in the Wall | Paramount+
I warn you that it has nothing to do with the film’The Woman in the Window‘, from Netflix. This miniseries tells the story of Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson, from ‘His Dark Materials‘, in great performance). She lives in a small Irish town, and wakes up one morning to find a body in her house. The worst part is that Lorna has no idea if she herself is responsible for the apparent murder. This is because Lorna has suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking for a long time, ever since she was taken away from home at the age of 15 and imprisoned in the Convent. This was a (fictitious) house of one of Ireland’s infamous Magdalene asylums for women. There, Lorna gave birth to her daughter Agnes, who was cruelly taken from her and whose fate Lorna never knew. Excellent miniseries!
The Summer that changed my Life | Prime Video
There are two beautiful seasons, which will speak volumes to anyone who still has a romantic teenager in their heart (like me, lol). A third has already been approved. The series is based on Jenny Han’s trilogy, the same as ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before‘. Tells the story of Belly. She, her mother and her brother always spend the summer at the Fisher family’s beach house. Over the years, she became very close to Conrad and Jeremiah, the Fishers’ two sons. It’s just that Conrad is her first love, but she never paid attention to her. But now, with Belly about to turn 16, things are different. At the same time, the two mothers, Laurel and Susannah, also face moments of decision in their lives.
Percy Jackson and the olympians | Disney+
A cute adventure series, one of those to watch with the whole family. The season’s story is basically the same as ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’, both are based on the character’s first book. Here, while facing monsters and outwitting gods, Percy Jackson will journey across the United States to return Zeus’s master bolt and prevent an imminent war. With the help of his mission companions, Annabeth and Grover, Percy’s journey will bring him closer to the answers to several questions. Among them, “how to fit into a world where he feels out of place?” and “what will be his future?”.
Designated Survivor | Netflix
The oldest series, but it returned to the medium with the death of Adan Canto. The first season was sensational (the other two, not so much). But it’s worth seeing. Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) is a cabinet member who unexpectedly becomes president after a devastating attack in Washington. He must fight to protect the country and his own family from further attacks, while tasked with assuming one of the most difficult presidencies in history. The series also follows the investigations of an agent (Maggie Q) into who the culprits of the first attack were.
Circle Dating | HBO Max
Good miniseries, with a sensational cast, created by Steven Soderbergh. It all starts when they kill a faction leader in New York. Soon after, couple Derek and Sam Browne (Timothy Olyphant and Claire Danes) have their routine interrupted. This is because he receives the news that his son, Jared, has been kidnapped. In desperation, they get in touch to initiate a rescue proposal. However, the kidnapping triggers a series of ancient secrets, connecting different people in a New York covered in crime and revenge. when the police begin an investigation into the Brownes and the violent events in the city.
Divine Drops | Apple TV+
I voted for it as one of the best series of last year. I fell in love with this novelistic and suspenseful story, which takes place in the world of wine experts. The miniseries has eight episodes that involve so much, that it is very likely that you will see it in one “sitting” (drinking wine, of course, lol).
The most valuable wine collection in the world is (literally) at stake between the two heirs of a famous winemaker. Camille (Fleur Geffrier) the daughter of wine expert Alexandre Lger (the charming Stanley Weber, Count St. Germain de ‘Outlander‘). She last saw him at age nine, after her parents’ divorce. Now she is informed of his death and summoned to read his will in Tokyo. There, she discovers that she can inherit her father’s precious wine cellar, but will have to undergo three oenology tests to receive the inheritance. The problem is that Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita), Lger’s talented pupil, is in contention with her.
