Each year, the LATAM has been hiring more women in Brazil for the positions of commander and co-pilot of its aircraft. This is what the airline’s survey of its 2023 selection processes indicates. In the last year alone, LATAM hired 44% of the total number of women in these positions on its team. The number represents 12% of the total number of pilots, including both sexes, hired in 2023 by the company.
LATAM is increasingly committed to creating a fair and inclusive work environment. In this context, we are expanding the presence of minority groups in our workforce in Brazil, making progress year after year. The fact that we almost doubled our number of female pilots in the company last year and reached the unprecedented goal of 5% of hiring people with disabilities shows us that we are moving forward on this path, comments Jefferson Cestari, director of Human Resources at LATAM Brazil.
In terms of its total workforce, LATAM hired more than 3 thousand professionals in Brazil in 2023. The three areas that received the most new employees were Airports, Cabin Crew (stewardesses) and Maintenance.
The company’s commitment to increasing the representation of minority groups in the qualified labor market is also demonstrated in the hiring of 48% of its staff of people with disabilities (PwD) over the last two years. LATAM ended 2023 becoming the first area in the country to have 5% PwD in its workforce.
Furthermore, the company ended the year with 18% black representation in the group of cabin crew, a number 4% higher than in 2022. Another important milestone reached in 2023 by LATAM was the total of 42 trans people hired in Brazil. The areas with the greatest trans representation in the company are Airports, Cabin Crew (attendants) and cargo.
To become more diverse and inclusive, LATAM has been working on several fronts, such as training to raise awareness among all employees on the topic of diversity, implementing innovative selection processes and, finally, defining its Diversity and Inclusion commitments. They are: ensuring equality of opportunities and more balance in the representation of women; have representation of people with disabilities; expand heterogeneity in professional areas to increase multiculturalism and create more spaces for greater social, ethnic, race/color, educational, age, gender diversity, etc.; and develop a more global culture, strengthened by the differences between employees of the LATAM group.
The growth of LATAM in Brazil
With 40% of the entire Brazilian market, LATAM ended 2023 as the leader of the Brazilian air sector, according to ANAC. Currently, the company operates the largest air network in its history in Brazil, with flights to more than 50 airports in the country. In 2023, LATAM also expanded its codeshare with Voepass, offering customers access to another 26 Brazilian destinations, mainly at regional airports.
Regarding international flights, LATAM is the airline that transports the most tourists to Brazil, with its own flights from 90 airports abroad. In November, LATAM and Embratur signed a technical cooperation agreement to promote the country internationally.
LATAM’s prospects in Brazil in 2024
In December 2023, LATAM reached the milestone of 8 new aircraft received in Brazil in the space of one month. This feat reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding Brazilians’ access to aviation. Still in 2023, 15 of the 17 new aircraft received directly from the factory by the LATAM group were directed to its Brazilian operation, which this year is expected to grow by 7% to 9%. For 2024, in fact, LATAM has already announced 4 measures to universalize aviation in Brazil, including the addition of 10 thousand daily seats to its operation in the country.
Since 2021, LATAM has been the leading airline in Brazil’s domestic and international market, according to ANAC. The index measured in RPK considers the number of passengers per kilometer transported by the company over the volume of passengers per kilometer transported by all airlines operating in Brazil.
RPK: acronym in English for Passenger Kilometers Transported.
