In celebration of Women’s Month, Play For a Causea company that uses sport and entertainment as tools for social transformation, mobilized football clubs and their athletes for social auction campaigns. Vasco, Grmio, Atlético Mineiro and Sport Recife donated their uniforms dedicated to women’s causes, worn and signed by their players, to help raise funds for NGOs that support women in socially vulnerable situations, in different regions of Brazil. The auctions take place simultaneously, with their own start and end dates, in the official platform from the company.
In the case of Vasco, the shirts used in the victory over gua Santa, for the Copa do Brasil, are available on the Play For a Cause platform with starting bids of R$900.00. There are 11 uniforms, model two of Gigante da Colina, worn and autographed by the starting players who started the match.
The items have the logo of Instituio Empodera, chosen to receive the resources raised through the action. The project brings the practice of sport to girls in socially vulnerable situations, promoting the democratization of these activities and positively impacting the lives of adolescents and their communities. The action is active until March 21st.
Galo also went to the field, against América, in the semi-final of the Campeonato Mineiro, with a tribute to women. Instead of their name, each player carried a female name on their shirt, which marked the history of the State. Paulinho, one of the scorers of the match’s two goals, had the name Conceio Evaristo on his back, the first black woman to take office at the Academia Mineira de Letras.
The auction with Atltico shirts is active until 03/20, with starting bids of R$390.00. In total, there are 14 uniforms available for bidding (11 home shirts and three reserve shirts). The amount will be allocated to Instituto Galo, which will apply the resources to projects dedicated to women.
Grmio, which has been promoting campaigns to combat violence against women since Carnival, celebrates the date with the donation of the shirt of Paraguayan midfielder Villasanti, used in the match on 10/02, against So Luiz, at the Arena do Grmio . In the game, valid for the Gacho Championship, the athlete entered the field wearing the number zero shirt, in reference to the ‘Grmio for Zero Harassment’ campaign, causing the first time that a player wears this number in Brazilian football.
The shirt will be available on the Play For a Cause website until March 20, with a starting bid of R$1,200.00. The net amount raised will be passed on to the Meninas em Campo project, which has been working since 2016 to democratize access to women’s football, with a free program for more than 200 girls between 9 and 17 years old, in the Butant neighborhood, in the West Zone of São Paulo.
Sport Club do Recife will take to the field next Saturday (16), against Santa Cruz, with special shirts, with the ‘Historic Women’ patch, to honor and amplify women’s fight for equality, respect and the end of machismo and violence. One of the honorees is Maria José, the club’s iconic fan, who passed away last year at the age of 98. Dona Maria was a pioneer in the stands of Ilha do Retiro, when women were not even welcome in football.
The auction will include 22 shirts, with starting bids of R$500.00, and will be open from March 16th to 26th. The amount raised will be allocated to the red-black women’s football department, with the aim of further promoting investments and structuring the sport in Sport.
Play For a Cause’s main mission is to give visibility, with the help of sport, to causes and problems that are often forgotten. With these auctions, we want to remember the history of women’s struggle not only against wage inequality, but also against machismo and violence. We thank our partners for being in this with us, comments Manuella Carvalho, founder and director of Operations at Play For a Cause.
