On March 21st, we celebrate the International Day of Forests and, in reference to that date, SOS Amaznia, in partnership with the agency Leo Burnett TM and development of HeroBase, launches a new stage of the campaign ‘The Original Map’, the first Fortnite map that brings to the reality of game references and characteristics of indigenous lands. The campaign is reinforced: personalized posters developed in collaboration with indigenous people from the Huni Kuin ethnic group.
To highlight the importance of protecting forests and indigenous peoples, young indigenous people gathered at the headquarters of SOS Amaznia, in Rio Branco, Acre, with the aim of recording in the original Htxa Kuin language phrases that make up the posters of the game. These phrases call people to play, fulfill the game’s missions and participate in the online activism proposed by Fortnite, both within the game and in the real world.
Verses such as Txi Nukawa (Put out the fire), Nawabu in nitxi (Expel the mining) and Nuk mae mekesukaw (Protect indigenous lands) are highlights of the posters along with graphic designs, called kenes, also made by Huni Kuin leaders. The kenes represent culture, ancestry and the relationship with the forest, like the boa constrictor, the fishbone and the alligator tail. Furthermore, streamer Letiltz (@letiltz) will do a special live on the subject, further increasing awareness of the environmental and social issues involved.
The Originrio Map was originally made available in July 2023, for young people from the Huni Kuin people, in Acre. The general public was able to see the news on August 9, International Indigenous Peoples Day. The project is signed in partnership with the Federation of the Huni Kuin People of Acre (FEPHAC), but it does not represent a specific ethnic group and, rather, creates a representation of common conflicts experienced by different indigenous groups in the Amazon.
