Former US President Donald Trump launched his own social network on Apple’s application platform, the App Store. The service is similar to Twitter’s microblogging model and is called Truth Social.
The app is designed and developed by Trump Media & Technology Group, the media company that the former president started after leaving the White House. However, some problems have already been reported: Users who downloaded the app were greeted with a welcome message, but the process of registering on the platform resulted in a long waiting list of over 150,000 people.
The creation of Truth Social is based on the history that the politician has with other social networks. After being suspended or warned on networks such as Twitter and Facebook for false information that led to acts of violence such as the invasion of the Capitol, Trump hopes to win back his space on the internet.
Congressional Republican Devin Nunes said last week that he expects Truth Social to be fully operational by the end of March, with easy access to all of the United States.
Trump is following new waves of social media that are emerging to go against mainstream models. Several conservatives gather on other platforms like Rumble and Parler. However, these apps suffer growth difficulties because they often gather false or dubious information. It is a process similar to Telegram in Brazil, where the government seeks to regulate the platform in order to combat channels for the propagation of denialist ideas, for example.
