Amid the rise of AI in iPhones, Apple faces financial crises. Google appears as an “ally”.
That chatbot too OpenAI is experiencing problems in terms of competition. Recently, the main rival of the company that owns the ChatGPTAnthropic, is investing in the inclusion of its own chatbot, Claude, in iPhones.
Being led by former OpenAI employees, who left the company due to disagreements with chief executive Sam Altman, Anthropic, in addition to having an artificial intelligence model that surpasses ChatGPT in some aspects, is one step closer to becoming more present than Altman’s chatbot in users’ daily lives.
“In today’s world, smartphones are at the center of how people interact with technology. To make Claude a true Al assistant, it is crucial that we meet users where they are, and in many cases, that is on their mobile devices,” commented Anthropic Product Manager Scott White, highlighting the importance of integrating Claude in people’s daily lives.
The third version of Claude is available and has three variations:
- Haiku: quick and simple variable;
- Opus: the paid version has the complete system;
- Sonnet: a robust version, but slower than Haiku.

Among the models made available by Anthropic, Opus was the one that stood out the most, becoming the first artificial intelligence to displace GPT-4 from the throne in the LMSys (Large Model Systems) chatbot ranking. , second only to the GPT-4 Turbo.
In addition to Opus’s vast ability to understand contexts, supporting up to 160,000 words, Anthropic also said that the Claude app will enable other features with the user’s permission, such as access to the camera and photo library.
“After a meeting, a business user can take a photo of a whiteboard diagram and ask Claude to summarize the key points, making it easier to share and act on important information. Similarly, a consumer can take a photo of a plant they encounter on a hike and ask Claude to identify the species and provide more information about its characteristics and habitat,” said White.
Beyond the device app AppleAnthropic is expanding its business with an enterprise plan, so that all team members can have access to the chatbot.
“We started Anthropic to lead the frontier of Al’s security and research […] We don’t think we would be able to positively influence the trajectory of the industry and inspire a race to the top in Al security if we weren’t able to compete at the frontier,” said Scott.
Even with a higher capacity model, ChatGPT did not face much competition on devices in general, which since its launch a year ago has remained one of the few AI models with an easily accessible application.
Crise na Apple
The technology giant, which was chosen to support Claude, is dealing with a drop in sales around the world. According to reports from Apple itself, demand for iPhones fell by more than 10% in the first quarter of 2024, while overall sales fell across the world, with the exception of Europe. To date, the company’s revenues have suffered the biggest drop in a year, which was 4%.
Additionally, overall sales in the critical Chinese market fell by 8%. Even given the scenario, Apple CEO Tim Cook seemed to be at ease with the situation during a conversation with investors.
According to him, “I maintain a great long-term view of China.”
Despite the scare, the company promised that these rates are not as bad as they seem, promising that sales will grow again in the coming months due to investments in AI. According to her, the numbers were impacted due to the lack of supply due to Covid-19, which, on the other hand, had increased sales during the same period in 2023.
Another factor that influenced the decline was competition with local companies, such as Huawei. These declines are in direct contrast to the global situation, which, according to technology market research and analysis company Canalys, recorded a 10% increase in smartphone shipments in the first quarter.
It is expected that the new artificial intelligence features that will come with the iPhone 16 will break this streak of bad luck for Apple which, since the iPhone 12, has not presented any major new features in its launches.
Google: an unlikely ally
Amid the crisis at Apple, which is facing legal problems with US and European regulators due to fees in the app store, a “new” ally has emerged.
As a way of remaining the default search engine on Apple devices, it was revealed that the Google paid US$20 billion (around R$101 billion at current prices) in 2022, which helped Apple to immediately increase its profits, making 17% of its operating income from this contract alone.
However, this “help” ended up making Google’s intentions to remain the main search engine on the internet even more evident, corroborating the United States Department of Justice’s side in the antimonopoly case against the company.
Apparently this soap opera is far from over and will bring more twists and turns.
