Over the last few years, the municipality of Saquarema has established itself as the main hub for water sports in Brazil and Latin America. Since 2017, the city has hosted stages of World Surfing League (WSL), and is considered by many to be the “surf capital” in the country. In May, the holding of the Aloha Spirit Festivalone of the largest water sports festivals in the world, continues the season of major sporting events in the region.
Between May 17th and 26th, the second annual stage of the Aloha Spirit Festival will be the city’s biggest sporting attraction. This year, Saquarema will be the stage for an unprecedented edition of the festival, which for the first time takes place over a period of ten days, with a model that interconnects sport, competition, well-being and entertainment.
In the sporting sphere, the Aloha Spirit Festival presents competitions in nine different sports, including Surfing and the Water Marathon, an Olympic sport in which Brazil is one of the main powers. The festival also stands out for its entertainment options, with attractions such as the ‘Gabriel O Pensador’ show already confirmed. With free entry for the public, the event will also offer open-air film festivals, clinics and lectures on sport, the environment and culture, in addition to yoga practice with great masters.
“For more than 15 years, the Aloha Spirit Festival has sought to unite sport, entertainment and social awareness. Now, back in Saquarema, we have prepared a special edition, which for the first time takes place over ten days and features a series of new features. Our intention is to offer, in addition to sporting competitions, different entertainment options and provide unique experiences for the public present. During the event period, we also seek to contribute positively to the city and the local population”, highlights João Castro, CEO of Ecooutdoor, the agency that created the Aloha Spirit Festival.
In 2024, Saquarema hosts the Aloha Spirit Festival for the third consecutive year. Since its first stage in the city, in 2022, the festival has contributed to the economic and social sphere. For this edition, there are expectations for the presence of more than 4 thousand people – including competitors, companions and spectators, which tends to boost the region’s economy. Furthermore, the organization also generates employment and income for the local population, hired to help with the event.
In April, the Lagos Region had already hosted another important water sports event, the Saquarema Surf Festival. In June, Vivo RIO PRO, a stage of the WSL Championship Tour, will also be played in the city. This will be the last preparatory competition before the Paris Olympic Games and will feature the participation of important names in Brazilian surfing, such as Gabriel Medina, Ítalo Ferreira and Yago Dora.
