UEFA, Europe’s leading football association, announced today, 24 February, that it will relocate this year’s Champions League final. The match, which is one of the most important games in world club football, was to take place in St. Petersburg, Russia. However, after the declaration of war against Ukraine, the organization thought it best to review the site.
The decision was informed from UEFA’s own twitter, which informed the causes of the decision. Still, a formal announcement will be made tomorrow, the 25th. In addition to the choice to change the host country of the final of its main competition, other emergency measures related to combat in the region should be taken soon.

The final match of the Champions League would take place at the Gazprom Arena, the stadium of Zenit, one of the biggest football clubs in the country. Even though the decision has already been made, no other country has been chosen to host the decision so far. According to Fred Caldeira, from TNT Sportes, the main candidates are London, Munich, Istanbul, Lisbon and Madrid.
It is worth remembering that even though it does not have many guaranteed representatives in European competitions, Russia has a strong influence on the organization. This is due to the partnerships made with the country that yield the organization large amounts of money. As such, the final host city was not expected to change, however conditions made the change inevitable.
This is not the first time that UEFA has changed the location where the Champions League final will be held in recent years, in fact the last few times were recent. In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the game to leave the cities originally planned for the occasions, Kiev, Ukraine, and Istanbul,
